     Newcomers and Friends

                          Board Meeting March 7, 2018

President Nalini Amin called the meeting to order at 1:09 pm with 24 members present. She thanked Jodi Baker for hosting the meeting.

Vice President Donna Cerna: nothing to report.

Secretary Maggie Blanchard read the February minutes and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Marjie Potechin reported on the income and expenses which were approved and a copy attached to the minutes.

Membership - Janice Weiner not present. Nalini reported that there are 206 members.

Luncheons – Millie Ginsburg, Muriel Usselman and Donna Jones reporting

- March is at Black Angus.

- April is Route 66 for a Sock Hop. Menu: Burgers; beef, vegetarian and turkey. 3 side options: Potato salad, cole slaw, fries. Cash bar is open. Soft drinks, coffee, tea are included. Does not include dessert but we may bring something in. Price is $18.21. Donna C. wants to round up to $19 so they can buy a dessert item. Kitty Zimmerman motioned. $19 approved. There was discussion regarding the capacity of the restaurant and maximum allowed to attend. Newcomer guests will be accommodated after members. Building capacity is approx. 100. No limit was set for luncheon reservations. 

- May is installation of new officers. Location not yet determined. Discussion ensued.

Activities – Pat Oguss not present. Game day will be end of April. Diane Gilden is hosting a Mahjong learning session on April 2nd and 23rd.

Web Mistress Barri Boren reported that the deadline for updates is the 10th.  We are renegotiating the contract to cover the next year or two.

Programs and Decorations – Jodie Baker reporting. All set for March. We’re getting ready with Sock Hop decorations. Wear something appropriate for the theme; i.e., poodle skirts, etc.

Recruitment – Luana Law reported that Coffee Corner is at Coco’s.

Auditor – Mikki Garside – nothing to report

Birthdays – Sonja Ley asked whether we would continue to give out the certificates in the next year. It was confirmed that it will continue.

Publicity – Gwen Halstead not present but she has another article in the local paper.

Reservations – Kay Moioffer reporting. 70 have signed up for the March luncheon as of the date of the board meeting.

Explorers – Kathy Giddens not present. Nalini reported on her behalf:

Clifton’s Cafeteria changed from March 24th to April 28th.

May is Brunch at the Beach.

Hostesses – Nothing to report. Diane Millikin asked about people needing name tags corrected. Muriel will provide sticky notes at the sign in table so they can note the corrections or they can contact Muriel.

New Member Liaison – Jodie reported there are several new members attending the luncheon.

Parliamentarian - Alyce Kesselman – nothing to report.

Opportunity Drawing - Carla Lewis received the ticket drum. There will be a change to the procedure in selling tickets and adding them to the drum, which will be safeguarded.

Social: Joyce Brady and Diane Millikin reporting.

Bingo is at Valencia Library, March 29th, 1:30-3:30. Cost is $5 which includes Bingo cards and refreshments.

Bowling is at Santa Clarita Lanes on Soledad is April 16th, starting at noon. Cost is $5 which includes 2 slices of pizza, salad, soft drink, 2 bowling games and shoes.

Sunshine – Kitty sent out several cards.  


New Business – Installation committee is being organized. Barri is withdrawing her name for executive V.P. The election will be held Thursday, March 8th.

Budget meeting for 2018 – 2019: Donna C. will hold this at a later date.

The April 4th board meeting will be at Joyce Brady’s house.
