Board Minutes 2/12

Newcomers and Friends Board Meeting
February 1, 2012

The meeting was called to order by President Carol Maul at 1:09 p.m.

In the absence of Muriel Usselman, Margaret Gilmer was asked to act as secretary for the meeting. Donna Jones read the minutes of the January meeting. A correction was made to taking the money from the historian's budget for the printing of song sheets. The minutes were approved as corrected.

Donna explained again that we would be charged more at the country club for the use of white linens. The charge would be more if we wanted colored linens. The cost of the meals at the restaurants will probably be going up soon. The March luncheon will be at the Valencia Country Club and will be either corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips or a Cobb salad. Red velvet cake will be the dessert. April and May luncheons will be at the country club.

Nancy Andrews reported that we now have 169 members.

Marlene Garside reminded everyone to proofread their submissions to the newsletter as it is not her job to do that. It must come to her just as it is to be put into the newsletter. She also requested that we make sure that names are correctly spelled.

Margaret Gilmer reported that the birthday was under control.

Margaret asked that any pictures we have that we would like to have included in the president's book be given to her no later than May 2 so that the book will be completed in time for the installation at the May luncheon. She also thanked Donna Jones for her help in putting the book together.

Karen Fine said that Grace would be willing to do publicity in multiple media for the March luncheon program. Alyce Kesselman suggested that instead of creating a monster by having so many unknowns respond, that each member try to bring a friend. After much discussion, her suggestion was decided upon.

It was decided that the musician would play background music while we were getting ready for the luncheon and play and sing during the luncheon. The main performance would be after the luncheon and before the raffle.

Alyce and Gia reminded everyone that they need to get their reservations in for the April Vagabond outing. The cost is $297 and has a maximum of 30 participants.

Jodie Baker announced that there are spaces available for both the March and May teas.

Lorrie reported that Shirley Birnholz requested an advance of money for napkins, sodas and other goodies for the March 1 game day. It was approved. Carol Costin said there would be another game day at a later date for just mahjong.

Carol Maul asked for volunteers to be the nominating committee. The committee will consist of Carol Maul, Carolyn Wolfe, Alyce Kesselman, Jeanine Boren, Marlene Garside and Donna Jones.

Old Business:
Alyce suggested that there was no need for every board member to bring food for 6 people to the meeting as it is held after lunch. Discussion took place as to either having 4 to 5 people appointed to bring light snacks or have money out of the treasury for snacks for the board meeting. Carol Costin moved to have the hostess reimbursed for an amount up to $25 for refreshments at the discretion of the hostess. It was seconded and approved unanimously.

The meeting adjourned at 2:13 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Margaret Gilmer
