President's Message

Greetings Ladies;
                                    
   
Ever wonder how, when, or where our Newcomers’ & Friends Club began?  

In 1928 William Briggs, a former newspaper man, had a vision of restoring some of the frontier day hospitality;
he established Welcome Wagon, Inc.  Mr. Briggs was a man of high principles and high ideals. The headquarters
was established in Memphis, Tennessee, later he had offices in New York and San Francisco.

Ruth Short, in 1948, established Welcome Wagon Service in the Reno/Sparks area and a few years later in the
Las Vegas area. They were known as the Welcome Wagon Newcomers Clubs of Reno and Sparks. Members
participated in civic and community life, contributed time to worthwhile charitable projects, and made many
new friends.

During the presidency of Nancy Rumberg, in 1989, Welcome Wagon Newcomers Club in Reno amended their
by-laws to better meet the needs of the area. They dropped the incorporated name of Welcome Wagon and became
Newcomers’ Club. The meaningful motto established in 1999 was: "There are no strangers here, only friends we
have not met". 

Thirty years ago our Santa Clarita Valley was developing and growing from a ranch and agriculture environment
into an active community for young families.  Our original Newcomers 
Founders realized the value and need to create
a club for women to share in local community life, create enhanced social activities, and develop new friendships. 

In June 1984 our local  Club was officially established as a Welcome Wagon Club, after several preliminary meetings
of an initial group of eight ladies.  As time unfolded our Board realized the value of encouraging new members
to join whose lives had significant changes. Our name has evolved, so that we are now known as Newcomers &   Friends of Santa Clarita Valley.  We are celebrating our 30th Year Anniversary in 2014-2015. Plans are developing
to celebrate this anniversary this fall!  

We now have 185 members, still growing, who enjoy many activities, games, and social events.  We are a social
club, however many of our members individually contribute their time and talents to various charitable
organizations throughout our valley.  
 

Today we have a founding member who dedicates her time and talents to continue our “legacy of togetherness”.
She is Jeannine Boren, Luncheon Decorations Chairman, who has a flair for color and design. Milly
Ginsburgh, Parliamentarian and Incoming President, joined the club a few months later; she guides us through
proper by-law procedures. 

We have many past presidents who are very supportive on our Board and help guide our many activities; the
list of names is very extensive. Many members have been with us for 10, 15, 20 or more years.  We appreciate each
one of you, Board members and general members!  

 

We are reorganizing Groups and Activities to better serve our members! Please see the note about
‘Activities Reorganization’ under Activities!

 
 

SPECIAL NOTICE: Wednesday, May 7th, 1 pm.  Our Board Meeting will be held at Irene Jansson’s Club House
at Green Brier, on Soledad Canyon.

***THE GIFT OF GIVING

Hey girl friends: Remember to save all the little toiletries from your vacation travels for "Domestic Violence of SCV".  The big collection is at the October luncheon but, you can bring them to me anytime during the year. Full size toiletries are welcome too! You wouldn't believe how much they appreciate our donations, saving them mucho $$$.

***The April General Meeting & Luncheon was filled with our beautifully dressed
ladies enjoying a delicious Chicken Piccata and Pasta Primavera Buffet at TPC.
The day was warm and clear and the view from TPC’s patio was breathtaking!
Nancy Andrews presented the outgoing Board Members with a gift and offered
them a heartfelt thank you, while exclaiming “we don’t have a club without
you!”  Jeannine Boren presented everyone with a ‘Happy Spring’ Whirligig. Patty
Finley and her cast members from ‘Damn Yankees’ enthralled everyone with
several musical numbers from their current play at Canyon Theater Guild!

Did you know that June, 2014 will begin the 30th year of Newcomers & Friends           of Santa Clarita Valley! The Board and the ‘Birthday Celebration Committee’
are already hard at work planning our celebration! The tentative date is  
Thursday, September 11th, so mark your calendars now for this very      
special extravaganza!!!

June’s General Meeting & Luncheon will be held at TPC, (Tournament Players
Club).  Patty Finley and troupe from the Canyon Theater Guild will entertain us
with music from the classic
musical ‘Singin’ in the Rain’! 

Donna, Irene and Karen are already working on next year’s Luncheon
sites. Where, oh where will they take us?  What program surprises do
Charnell, Donna and Berni have in mind
for us? Stay tuned…

Our ‘Coffee Corner’ welcomes potential new members and current members for a morning of friendship at different locations around SCV each month.

The May Coffee Corner will be held on Thursday,    May 22, at 10 a.m.

ACTIVITIES 

                                  Activities Reorganization

The goal of Newcomers and Friends is to welcome newcomers to our organization, and provide them, as well as our current members, with a variety of activities that are open to all members.  It is important that our list of Activities on the website grid includes only those groups that are open to new players and/or subs. Many of our new members have been disappointed when they have tried to get into the games listed on our website and have been told that there are no openings and that the group does not use any subs.  This is very discouraging and not fair to someone who has joined expecting to take part in our activities.  To remedy this unfriendly situation, it was decided by the Board, to only list as official activities, those that give all our members the opportunity to join the group in some way--even if it is just as an occasional substitute.



Mexican Train Dominoes is held on the 2nd Friday of each month and is open to all members. Please see detailed information below.

We are also working on starting an open game day, more details coming when they are set.

Carla also holds game training days, April 30th is the next one. Please contact her for info.

 As always, if you interested in participating in, or especially, coordinating any activities such as walking, games, movie outings, gardening or couples activities, please contact me.

Mexican Train Dominoes

You are invited to join us for a fun, social game of Mexican
Train Dominoes. Open to all members! We play the second
Friday every month!

This is the only game available to Newcomers & Friends that
does not require a monthly commitment or RSVP and is
open to all members
. Come whenever you’re available. Dominoes
is a fun, but simple game that that you can learn in a few minutes
and play right away.

Start time is 10:30 AM and we stop around noon to order lunch.
We play till about 2 PM. If you are a new member, this is a great
way to start getting involved with your club and to meet new friends.
If you are a long time member, come have fun with old and
new friends. We would love to have you! Contact me for location.

                                      Tea Ladies

Well, spring certainly showed up at the April Tea.  All of the guests wore beautiful hat and it was so hard
to choose a winner we had to have our hostess' husband choose our first, second and third
place winners. Thanks to all of you lovely ladies, the food was fantastic. Have you all been
taking cooking lessons??  Our hostess, Nalini outdid herself with beautiful table settings and
her wonderful table favors.  Many thanks to her for a great afternoon!

This will be her second term serving the Club as President, what a trouper she is! A fun party is planned with lots of surprises and a special feast at Robinson Ranch! The Club is subsidizing $4 each for the Luncheon to offer an upgraded meal and still keep
it at our usual charge. Our new Board Members will also be installed. Let’s all wear purple and/or pink
