MONTHLY UPDATE -  AUGUST 2016   Print Page

Hi friends!  I hope your summer is relaxing and yet fun.

July brought us the Vino Train to Santa Barbara.  The vintage railcars were superb.  The breakfast and dinner served onboard were delicious and dessert was the sweet finale to a fun day in Santa Barbara.  Our group of 20 relaxed and visited on the ride up, then broke into smaller groups to enjoy the town.  Wine tasting, shopping, strolling along the beach, riding the trolley car, lunch at varied restaurants, laughter, etc. filled the day.  It felt good to get back into our club seats for the train ride home, what a wonderful day it was!

Our July luncheon at Piccolo Trattoria was a special event with a scrumptious buffet.  We were honored to have The Honorable Judge Alan Rosenfield, Captain Roosevelt Johnson, Captain Edward Krussey, and Assistant Fire Chief Gregory Hisel as our guests and speakers.  Throughout their careers, they have devoted their lives to protect and to serve the public and we all are grateful to them for taking time to share their stories with us.

Next up will be our Evening Under the Stars on August 27.  You are welcome to bring a spouse/significant other/friend or come as you are.  This is not a couples only event, I want you all to attend!  It will be an evening of socializing, snacking and maybe a little fun contest or two!  Also, we need more participants for the Senior Olympics in September.  Pick an activity from Corn Hole, Mexican Train, Croquet, Walk in the Pool or Balloon Toss, call Pat O. and let her know your choice.  She will then fill out the remaining teams and you’ll be off and running!

I hope you join in the fun this year.  In addition to all our regularly occurring events such as the luncheon, tea, coffee corner, Mexican train, etc.  we have social events, Explorer’s trips and new game days planned, an additional 2-3 events per month.  Please let the ladies organizing and setting up your events know you appreciate their efforts!

In closing, there is a lot of bad news and hatred in the world.  Let’s be sure to keep Newcomers and Friends a warm and friendly place for all our members.  I will not tolerate anything else during my term.  Life is short, friendship is sweet.  Savor the moments.

Diane

Couples Night Out

Meet new couples and try out new local restaurants.

Join us and explore the restaurants of the Santa Clarita Valley and
surrounding areas.

Dinners will be every other month.

We have received a great response to this new activity. So much
so, that we have had to revise it a little and now are taking a total
of 12 couples.  A 'couple' is any two people.  We are looking for
two more couples, so if you are interested, let me know.  It is still
first come, first served.  We will follow the example of the
Gourmet Dining Group and split into two smaller groups,
visiting separate restaurants each time, but will continually rotate
two couples so that everyone will have an opportunity to dine out
with everyone else in the group.

If you are interested, please contact me, Janice W. at     jmw2kdsdog2@yahoo.com or 661-714-1117

First dinner - Sat. July 30th, 7:00p.m.
Piccola Trattoria, Canyon Country

Each party is responsible for their own bill.
The group will decide future dining dates and destinations.

The Coffee Corner

Coffee Corner welcomes potential new members and current members for a morning of friendship at different locations around SCV. The event is scheduled on the third Thursday of the month.  New members are encouraged to attend as it is a great way to make new friends and find out about the Club's activities.

The August Coffee will be held the IHOP, 18677 Soledad Canyon Road at 10:00 AM on August 18th.

Since we need to make reservations, if you plan to attend, please contact Luana L., Gwen H. or Donna J. Hope to see you there.

Thanks,

Luana

Mexican Train Dominoes

You are invited to join us for a fun, social game of 'Mexican Train Dominoes'. Open to all members! We play the second Friday every month!

This is the only game currently available to "Newcomers & Friends" that does not require a monthly commitment or RSVP and is open to all members. Come whenever you’re available. Dominoes is a fun, but simple game that you can learn in a few minutes and play right away.

This game is held at the IHOP restaurant which is located on Lyons, near the I-5 freeway. We start playing at 10:30 am and take a break around noon to order lunch and eat together.

We play till about 2 pm. If you are a new member, this is a great way to start getting involved with your Club and to meet new friends. If you are a long time member, come have fun with old and new friends. We would love to have you.

Please contact me at 661-670-0395 with any questions.

Tea Ladies

This month, we celebrated Americana by wearing Red, White, and Blue, and enjoying the pretty decorations throughout Nalini's house, along with beautiful patriotic floral centerpieces. Marje served as her co-hostess. Conversation was lively, as usual, covering topics from recently read books to travel and craft projects. We enjoyed a challenging quiz on Americana, soliciting laughs and some frustrations when we knew we knew the answers, but just could not recall them. Do you know the first seven words to the Declaration of Independence, or on average, how many hot dogs are eaten on the 4th ofJuly?!

Come and join us. Contact me via email or by phone. I am getting ready to create sign-up sheets for 2017, so if you would like to hostess a tea or just join us as a guest, let me know! Janice.
