President's Letter

President’s Message for November 2012

Happy Thanksgiving, Dear Newcomers and Friends.

Take time to be friendly . . . it is the road to happiness.
Take time to laugh . . . it is the music of the soul.
Take time to give . . . it is too short a day to be selfish.
Take time to work . . . it is the price of success.
Take time to do charity . . . it is the key to happiness.

(from a Thanksgiving card I received)

Those of you who attended the September luncheon, already know that the revised By Laws were reviewed and approved by the general membership at that luncheon according to Article 12 of the By Laws. Remember the entire By Laws can be found on the website.

At this month's luncheon we look forward to the Singing Sisters, who will once again provide a toe-tapping, joy-filled performance that will enable us to release the child within ourselves. The Singing Sisters consist of Karen Fine, Grace Elliott, Nalini Amin, Giovanna Cabaret, Alyce Kesselman, Sue McMichael and me.

Remember: The December luncheon is at the Tournament Players Club. At this luncheon, we will again be collecting unwrapped, new toys for the children. The cost of each toy should be at least $10. It's a delightful way to share our hearts with others, especially the children. I was told years ago by a beloved teacher, "Remember we only have one childhood." We hope that no child will be without a gift during this special season.

We also look forward to our beloved former president, Patti Finley, and fellow performers from Canyon Theatre Guild, who will entertain us at the December luncheon with songs from White Christmas. This is a new musical based on the movie of the same name. It runs from November 23 to December 23. We are blessed to have such a talented Newcomer. We appreciate your generous gift of self to us.

May your heart be filled with Thanksgiving.

Donna Jones
, President, Newcomers & Friends

Tea Group and Tea for Two

The September Tea at Pat Oguss' home was delightful! A beautifully appointed table greeted us as we gathered. A quiz, in keeping with the September 11th theme, was passed out for each guest to ponder and try to answer. We had three first place winners! We each shared a bit about someone in our family that had served in the military. These stories covered WWII thru the current happenings in the Middle East. There were some very moving stories. Thank You Pat and your co-chairs for a wonderful afternoon.

If you would like to join us for Tea, call Jodie Baker or Ginger Freed. The December Tea will be held at Jodie Baker's home and will seat 24 ladies. Call Jodie for your seat ASAP as we have only 9 more places for this event. A cup of tea with friends is a heartwarming experience.

The November Party Bus tour had to be cancelled.

The Vagabonds thank those who eagerly signed up and were excitedly ready to go on our unusual San Diego excursion. We are very sorry that, sadly, only 2/3 of the required participation was achieved. That did not allow for a viable trip.

Putting together and planning our style of “overnight” involves many, many hours of work before it is even announced to the club. We spent much time on this project and expected more support from the members of Newcomers and Friends. Personally, we wish the outcome had been different because we were looking forward to going on such a unique itinerary.

We suggest that you participate in the activities of the Social Club for future tour experiences, and hope you will join Vagabonds again in the spring.

Please check the addition of our great Long Beach trip photos by going to Album on this website and viewing Queen Mary Trip.

May you have a thoughtful and inspiring Thanksgiving Holiday.

Please be advised that we will publish personal or private information only from members who wish to be acknowledged in our newsletters.

Many of you may remember longtime member Helen Gurwitt Saltzman. She passed away in early September of this year. A memorial was held for her on the East Coast.

Myrna Picard who is moving to Calabasas sends a heartfelt goodbye and thank you to Newcomers and Friends for 10 wonderful years. She said, "I will miss the friendship and spirit of this Fantastic Group of Women!"

We're sending our very best wishes for speedy recoveries to
  • Pat Whelchel's Husband and
  • Ginger Freed's sister.
Nancy Andrews warns us, "That which we don't anticipate can take us by surprise." Yes, something did take her by surprise, but NOW her left knee is healing very well and she thanks us all for the good wishes we sent her way.

In closing, our prayers and thoughts are with Helen Hanges on the loss of her husband.

Carla Crancer and Pat Oguss

If you or anyone your know has a special celebration or an illness, please send the information to a Sunshine chairperson,  so that she can send them a card and include them in our monthly updates.
