Hi Ladies,

Travel!  Who doesn’t like to explore the world?  I’m amazed at all the places members have visited, cruised and explored.    Our October luncheon featured our Tablescapes competition where we traveled to places like Hawaii, Paris, the beach, and Halloween land.  The backdrop to this was the beautiful Knollwood Country Club.  Everyone worked hard and their displays were beautiful!  Thanks to all the teams!

Speaking of teams, our second annual Senior Olympics was another hit!  Six teams competed, with the Red Barons taking home first place trophies!  Approximately 40 ladies enjoyed competing in bean bag toss, croquet, Mexican train and balloon toss and also spent time socializing on a warm September day.

Everyone left with a little something for their efforts!  Thank you Pat Oguss!  Do I hear 3rd annual???

Next up we will be going to Valencia Country Club, another venue with beautiful views and a delicious luncheon buffet.  Grace will be bringing us a special guest, Lucinda Sue Crosby, award winning author and journalist, professional athlete, Nashville songwriter, actress, etc.  She promises to share many interesting stories with us!

There are many activities scheduled for the rest of the year, up through and including May.   Take a look at our interactive calendar below so that you can plan what you’d like to join in on!  There are some new things added each month.

I want to thank my friends that continue to help and support me in so many ways.  I appreciate you all!

The Gift of Giving

"Help the Children"

Food staples will be collected at our November luncheon for 'Help the Children'. '' Help the Children' receives no government financing, operates on donations, and distributes food in cooperation with our local Food Pantry so those in need receive food from only one distribution center.  All donations, by individual members of Newcomers and Friends, their families, friends, and neighbors, are so appreciated by those in need in our community.

Results From Our 2016 Senior Olympics

We are PROUD OF ALL THIRTY OF OUR  2016  SENIOR  ATHLETES  and especially proud of the IMPRESSIVE performance we witnessed by team “Red Barons” who were guided to a 1st place victory by their hard-working, well-organized captain Muriel Usselman.  The “Red Barons” dressed in the color red for the occasion.  The consolation prize was awarded to team “Purple People Eaters” and their fearless captain Jean Luehrs.  What color do you think they all wore to our Senior Olympics???

And we cannot overlook the dedication of our four other captains and their teams.  Yes, a total of six teams competed this year for prizes and ribbons:  captain Donna Cerna led her “Ninja Nannies” all dressed in black with bright green headbands, captain Diane Williams led her “Dizzy Dames” all dressed in purple, captain Donna Jones led her “Smurfs” dressed in a very patriotic red, white, and blue, and co-captains Kathy Kunkel and Trish Morring led their “Wild Things” all dressed in psychedelic colors!

A big round of applause - - clap, clap, clap - - to our squad of cheerleaders who both cheered for the six teams and stepped in for the athletes who had gone on the injured reserve list.  Thinking ahead, Squad leader Nancy Andrews made colorful pompoms for her cheerleaders.  A special thank you to our fair and impartial judges:  Noreen Motts, Marie Moreno, Mary Grisaffi, Diane Gilden and Diane Millikin.   For the second year Diane Millikin allowed our Senior Olympians the use of her fabulous home and backyard for the opening ceremonies, the traditional march of the teams, the games, and the distribution of awards. Thank you, Diane.

Thank you to all for your inspiring performances on and off the field.

Goooooooooooooooooooooo Teams!

                              TO ALL GAME PLAYERS

We would like to compile a list of all players who would like to play in a game or become a member of a sub list for a game.

Hopefully this will help to start new groups or get more calls to sub in a game.

Also established games will be able to add to their sub lists.

Please e-mail me to let me know all the games you are interested playing or learning.

Also let me know of any other activities such as bowling or movies or any group you would like to see started.

If you have a game and are having trouble finding a sub please call Barbara Ferone, I have a list of members hoping to play. I can also assist your group with a list of venues you can play in instead of individual homes.

 Tea Ladies

We had a delightful time at Sandi Cates' home this afternoon. I heard someone mention that she had never had a scone before, and is now hooked.  One of our newest club members joined us for the first time, and enjoyed getting to know people in a smaller group setting. Sandi had some beautiful miniature tea sets, cups and pots scattered throughout her home to add to the ambiance.

We are looking for a few more hostesses for the 2017 year, so if you are interested, please contact me.  Remember, you can borrow anything you need.  I am taking sign-ups for the months for which I do have hostesses, so please let me know if you are interested in attending.  Even though we are talking 2017, the guest lists will fill fast.  For a little change of pace, we will be having a morning Tea next August.

About Our Website!

Newcomers and Friends has its own website on the internet.
You can go to the website,, at any time, 24/7 and read the latest news.  Also we recently took everyone's last name off the site to protect privacy. Upon further discussion, the Board voted we add them back for ease of use and we will do that over the next couple of months.  We update the website every month with new information including Luncheon info, the President’s message and all of our upcoming activities. Then we tell Shirley Birnholz. who sends everyone a "reminder" email letting you know that we have updated the information on the site.  If you do not receive these emails, or your email address changes contact Shirley. Like magazines, we update the webpage towards the end of the current month, for the next month. The exact day varies due to the many people involved and Godaddy our website manager/provider. If you have any questions or comments please contact your webmistresses/editors/writers Barri Boren and Sandy Enerle.

With much appreciation I want to thank all of the Newcomer members for their heartfelt thoughts, kind words, donations to ALS for the loss of my son.
