President's Message

Greetings Ladies;

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

St. Patrick is a Patron Saint of Ireland. He was not a born Irish, but has become an integral part of
the Irish heritage, mostly through his service across Ireland in the 5th century.  Patrick was born in
the latter half of the 4th century AD. His birth place was either Scotland or Roman England. His real name was probably Maewyn Succat.  Patricius was his Roman name, he was later known as Patrick. Calpurnius, his father, was a Roman-British army officer.

Patrick grew up in Britain. One day a band of pirates landed in south Wales and kidnaped the boy
along with many others. They sold Patrick into slavery in Ireland; he was in prison for about 6 years. He dreamed of having seen God. Legend says, he was directed by God to escape with a getaway ship. He escaped, went to Britain and then to France. There he joined a monastery and studied for about
12 years under St. Germain, the Bishop of Auxerre.

He became a Bishop and dreamed that the Irish people were calling him back to Ireland to tell them about God. The Confessio, Patrick's spiritual autobiography is the most important document regarding his calling.  It tells of a dream after his return to Britain when Victoricus delivered him a letter entitled "The Voice of the Irish."

He traveled to Ireland with the Pope's blessings and converted the Gaelic Irish to Christianity; the people were mostly Pagans.  He journeyed far and wide baptizing and confirming many people.
He made important converts among the royal families which upset the Celtic Druids. Patrick was arrested several times, but escaped each time. He traveled throughout Ireland establishing schools
and churches. He developed a native clergy, fostered the growth of monasticism, established
dioceses, and held church councils.

Patrick's orthodox doctrine has been interpreted as anti-Pelagian. A few of his writings remain extant (not lost): his Confession, a reply to his detractors, and several letters. The Lorica ("Breastplate"), a famous hymn attributed to Patrick, may date to a later period. By the end of  the 7th century Patrick had become a legendary figure, and the legends have continued to grow.

He used the three-leafed Shamrock to explain the concept of the Trinity, a combination of Father,
Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Legend indicated that Saint Patrick had put the curse of God  on venomous snakes in Ireland. He drove all the snakes into the sea where they drowned.

During 1500 years, these legends have been combined with the facts. Patrick's mission in Ireland
lasted for over 20 years. He died on March 17, AD 461. The day's spirit celebrates the universal baptism of Ireland. Originally a Catholic holy day, St. Patrick's Day has evolved into a secular
holiday; 'be an Irish Day '.

Pondering Thoughts:  Be open to new possibilities

March Board Meeting to be held at Greenbrier’s Clubhouse on March 5th, 1 pm.

SPECIAL NOTE:

Many members are concerned when we have a Board meeting and a Luncheon, the General meeting,
in the same week.  This occurs several times during the year. This schedule does not allow sufficient time to discuss issues and plan for events and activities. To resolve this dilemma it was determined to continue to have the Board meeting on the first (1st) Wednesday of the month and return to holding
the General Meeting & Luncheon on the second (2nd) Wednesday of the month. The Club originally changed the Luncheon day to Thursday to accommodate meeting at the Valencia Country Club, but
we no longer meet there. The schedule change will begin with our new year starting in June.

By-Laws ARTICLE 10

Section 1: General Meetings
General meetings shall be held every second Thursday of the month at which time Club
business
shall be conducted. Reports shall be made by Executive Board Members and Committee Chairpersons who wish to do so. The Board may change the date at its discretion, making sure to properly notify
all members.

Activities

I am excited to announce that the Board suggested we start a new "Open Game Day" for all Newcomer members!  I am putting together a new Activities Calendar and will take a census
of a good day for the majority. For this day, people can play different games or we can rotate games. If anyone would like to volunteer to co-host this, please let me know! It will be open
to anyone who wants to come, no commitment/RSVP needed. This is a good chance to just
get together, socialize and have fun.  More details to come!

We had a very successful Pinochle training day that resulted in the formation of two new groups. We can use some more people to fill out the second group and we can always use substitutes
so if you are interested in a Pinochle group let me know.

I have at least 6 more people interested in Bunco but we need someone to step up and volunteer to chair a new group. I will be happy to help you get the group started!

Our next training day is going to be for ‘Hand Knee and Foot’. I have not set a date yet, but it
will most likely be in April. Please contact me if you are interested in learning this game. We can get a new group started once the training is over.

We are thrilled that we are getting such a great response from our members and look forward
to getting more people involved.  Thank you all for your enthusiasm. We are growing and just getting better.

I also plan to set up new groups for many games as the sub lists are long for established
groups. To accomplish this we need volunteers to be group coordinators!  If anyone
wants to start a new group for games, walking, gardening, couples activities or any activity
I will be happy to assist them in any way.

As always, if you interested in participating in, or especially, coordinatingany activities such
as walking, gardening or couples activities, please contact me.

 'NFFUN’ Wants You!

Newcomers and Friends are offering an exciting new opportunity for members to get together for fun.
If you want to socialize and/or eat, go places and do interesting things, this no fuss “go whenever the
spirit moves  you” group is for YOU…

It is expected that input will come from members who are interested in seeing ‘NFFun’ succeed and
that individuals (or teams of members) will suggest and coordinate future events.

You have probably already received a NFFUN e-mail.  If you did not, call Alyce K. or Mikki G. to ask for
a phone call.  Email or call them to be added to the email contact list or to discuss your idea for an outing.
