Hi Sweet Friends! 

Our February luncheon was a blast!  Ladies came decked out in all kinds of great hats.  We had fun socializing while enjoying a wonderful meal.  Contest winners were:  Prettiest Hat:  Nalini Amin, Funnies/Silliest Hat:  Wynn Weber, Most Vintage Hat:  Sharon Welch, and Most Original Hat:  Noreen Motts.  Joyce outdid herself on the table decorations, making 16 different miniature hats for our tables.  We raffled them off to the participants.  Everyone also took home a Valentine treat!

The nominating committee is still hard at work preparing the slate of officers to be voted on at the March meeting.  We desperately need someone or a committee to head up First VP Luncheons or we won’t have anywhere to go starting in June!  In addition, we need a Treasurer (Kay will help and back-up) and a Program Chair. We also need a co-chair for Historian to take pictures. (We have someone who is willing to take on historian if someone will co-chair).

We need YOU to join the dedicated ladies that serve on the board.  Please contact me to let me know how you will help for next year-we want to keep the momentum from this year going, but we need help! 

Dust off your cowboy boots for our March luncheon!  We’ll be celebrating the Cowboy Festival with our entertainment and meal and then work it off with a little line dancing.  I hope to see you there!

The American Legion is located in back of the Newhall Branch Library, in the shared parking lot.

This luncheon will be catered by Rattlers Bar-B-Que  


Cost: $21.00 per person

Includes tax and gratuity

Dust off your cowgirl boots, put on your western hats and outfits, and come on down to the American Legion Hall to join in on the fun. Plenty of barbecue and all the fixins', live music, and line dancing will make this a mighty fine way to spend an afternoon with friends!

In observance of the Annual Cowboy Festival held in Newhall each April, we are having our own Newcomers pre-celebration at our March luncheon and general meeting. We will be welcomed by American Legion Post 5077 Commander Greg Nutter, who has generously made this hall available to us. Dave Knutson, Director for the Cowboy Festival, will provide information to Newcomers on this popular event. Erwin Jackson, a favorite at the Cowboy Festival, will entertain us with music and songs to get us into the Wild West spirit. Dave and Dana Colin, dance instructors, will lead us in line dancing.

Please attend! Invite your friends, take part in the festivities, dance, sing, clap your hands, sway to the music, and enjoy! Hope to see all y'all there!





April's Amazing Auction! We will hold our annual Auction at the April Luncheon this year! More details later, but we will do both a silent and live action auction for up to 3 items per person. All proceeds go back to the seller!!! Barri Boren will again emcee and is sure to provide an entertaining afternoon for all! Start gathering your three items now; Antique, collectible, new or preowned treasures, gift cards etc.! Psst...Past best sellers have been wine and jewelry!

This is not your everyday weekend in San Diego! We’ll travel back in time on a 1950 Pullman Sleeper and this will be our hotel for the night. Our trip begins at LA Union Station where we board the private rail car. Coffee, orange juice, mimosas and pastries will be served on our trip south. All other meals are on our own.


Our itinerary is:

March 4

7:25 am -Depart LA Union Station. Continental style breakfast on board

10:16 am -Arrive San Diego Amtrak Station. Lunch, dinner, wandering on our own

March 5

11 am –Bruch at Extraordinary Desserts $24

(Buffet-style brunch featuring smoked salmon, roasted turkey breast, yogurt, homemade granola, fresh fruit, gourmet cheeses, bread and Cie bread selection, pastries, and signature desserts. Includes house coffee and hot tea selections.)

9:30 pm –Arrive LA Union Station


We will carpool to Union Station. Parking is about $8/day.


The Pacific Sands has eight roomettes that sleep one person. Shared shower and toilet. Towels and linens provided.


There are six “double bedrooms” with upper and lower berth, toilet/sink, and a small closet. One person must climb a steep ladder to the top bunk. Space is tight. Travel light. Train car is pre-ADA, you must be able to climb aboard and navigate the narrow hallway.


You may bring food and drink aboard if you wish. No refrigerator.


Space is limited to 20 persons. Cost is $199 per person plus $24 for the optional Sunday brunch.

March 29 – Melting Pot Food Tour Pasadena 
Reserve by March 10

Our guide will take us through the charming alleys of Old Town Pasadena meeting chefs and sampling their fare. We'll visit other shops and learn more than you wanted to know about food and the alleyways in Pasadena!

Wear comfy shoes, this is a walking tour lasting 2-3 hours. There will be places to rest between stops but not much. If you have food allergies let me know. You can be accommodated with advance notice.

Cost is not nailed down yet. It will be about $40 to $60. Contact me to get on the interest list then send a $30 deposit. Make the check payable to “Newcomers” but mail it to me.

May 23-24 Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort and Spa

Spend a few days at this beautiful spa resort in San Luis Obispo (SLO). We will relax in our private mineral hot tub right outside our room. We’ll dine in style at Gardens of Avila right on the property.

Suites sleep two to four persons. Each room has a $25 resort fee that covers yoga, Pilates, parking, etc. It will save us a little if we room in groups. Rates and room choices vary. There are multiple buildings on the campus.

9 am - Carpools leave Santa Clarita Caravan style

noon – lunch at Apple Farm or Splash Café & Bakery, wander around SLO

3 pm – check in to our rooms and maybe go for a soak in the hot tub

6 pm – walk to dinner at Gardens of Avila

8 pm – go for another soak




Walk to Avila Beach along Bob Jones Trail or go for a morning soak

11 am – check out and wander SLO or Avila Beach. Carpools lunch on their own

Cost varies according to how many share a room. Rates are $169-$499 not including tax and resort fee. I will ask that you make your own reservations because I am uncomfortable charging the room deposits to my credit card.

Option for a Two-Night Stay


The Guest House sleeps 10. It has three bedrooms, three baths, with two king beds, two double beds, and a queen sleeper sofa. Ugh, I know. Perhaps we’ll go with eight persons. Full kitchen, fireplace, living room, dining room, two hot tubs, it goes on.


Cost for two nights is $2664, tax and resort fee included. Divide by ten and the cost is $266 for both nights. Divide by eight and the cost per person is $333. If enough members are interested in this option I will coordinate the room reservation. Call now! Operators are standing by!

                                     TEA LADIES

Joyce Brady's home was the setting of a beautiful Valentine's Day Tea. We shared some interesting and often funny stories of how we met our significant others. Nalini topped them all when we learned that she married her husband after knowing him for only 10 days!

As usual, we had delicious food, from deviled eggs, to shrimp, to scones.

The Coffee Corner



Coffee Corner welcomes potential new members and current members for a morning of friendship at different locations around SCV. The event is scheduled on the third Thursday of the month.  New members are encouraged to attend as it is a great way to make new friends and find out about the Club's activities. 

The March Coffee Corner will be Thursday, March 16  at 10:00AM  at Everest.  The address is 18645 Soledad Canyon Road.

Mexican Train Dominoes

You are invited to join us for a fun, social game of 'Mexican Train Dominoes'. Open to all members! We play the second Friday every month!

This is the only game currently available to "Newcomers & Friends" that does not require a monthly commitment or RSVP and is open to all members. Come whenever you’re available. Dominoes is a fun, but simple game that you can learn in a few minutes and play right away.

This game is held at the IHOP restaurant which is located on Lyons, near the I-5 freeway. We start playing at 10:30 am and take a break around noon to order lunch and eat together.      

We play till about 2 pm. If you are a new member, this is a great way to start getting involved with your Club and to meet new friends. If you are a long time member, come have fun with old and new friends. We would love to have you.

About Our Website and Our Facebook Page

Newcomers and Friends has its own website on the internet.  
You can go to the website,, at any time, 24/7 and read the latest news.  Also we recently took everyone's last name off the site to protect privacy. Upon further discussion, the Board voted we add them back for ease of use and we will do that over the next couple of months.  We update the website every month with new information including Luncheon info, the President’s message and all of our upcoming activities. Then we tell Shirley Birnholz. who sends everyone a "reminder" email letting you know that we have updated the information on the site.  If you do not receive these emails, or your email address changes contact Shirley. Like magazines, we update the webpage towards the end of the current month, for the next month. The exact day varies due to the many people involved and Godaddy our website manager/provider.

We also have a new Facebook Page- Visit Newcomers and Friends of Santa Clarita and "Like" us.
