MONTHLY UPDATE -  APRIL 2016   Print Page

Where do I begin to tell you of the friendship and fun that was had by so many of our members during the first ever cruise for Newcomers and Friends?  While there were a few forgotten passports that had to be retrieved at the last minute, everyone boarded the bus to take us to our beautiful, enormous ship.  Staterooms were found and luggage dropped off so we could begin to relax and have fun.  Yes, we had much fun and even some frolic not to mention the various games, shows, quizzes, fabulous, unlimited food and movies.  The Murder Mystery masquerade was attended by all and the masks, the Tea and the sleuthing was great!  We had three correct answers naming the culprit which won gift cards for the ladies who figured it out.  Due to a fabulous performance by Margaret Day as the guest who discovered the victim ( in the bathroom) the Golden Mask Award was presented to her.  You had to be there!   Next up  was a fun Bunco Morning and other games planned just for us.  Disco night began with an surprise performance by couples who obviously had taken Waltz and Cha Cha lessons. Some of us were a bit intimidated but several claimed their dance with Jack Baker. Later on we all went to another venue and danced our “socks” off.  You will probably hear some chat about your President  and her floor work.  Don’t believe everything you hear.   Our shore excursions were fun, birthdays celebrated, photos taken, the casino was visited and a great time was had by all. Thank You to the committee that helped create this event.  Let’s us do it again!!

Now on to installation.  You absolutely do not want to miss this!!!!!!!  Come one and all to Robinson’s Ranch and be dazzled. Reserve your seat now.
I guess it is time to get serious;  I have loved being your President this past year and I give hugs and kisses to my board and to all of you for such a great year.  I will turn the gavel and the “reins” over to Diane with a smile and a sigh because I know she will be a great leader.   Just remember, all of us are  important to the success of our friendships and our wonderful group.  Hugs and love to all……….Jodieb …Thanks for the memories.

Like magazines, we update the webpage towards the end of the current month, for the next month. The exact day varies due to the many people involved and Godaddy our website manager/provider.                                                   AHOY FRIENDS!

‘Friends a Cruising’ Cruise

The first ever Newcomer’s and Friends Cruise was a high seas hit! Everyone reports having a really great time! We experienced new adventures and made special memories with friends and family along the California coast!

Jodie and Jack Baker conducted a murder mystery during High Tea onboard ship. She created gorgeous Mardi Gras style masks for everyone to wear along with their ‘Formal Night’ finery. It was quite the mystery to solve with everyone acting ‘in character’.  Kathy Kunkel was the dastardly victim, she was murdered by Corrie Boren and her body discovered by “Best Actor” winner Margaret Day. Shirley Birnholz was first to guess correctly who the murderer was with Carol Costin not far behind. Then it was on to dinner!

We visited San Francisco, Santa Barbara, San Diego and Ensenada Mexico. Even though most have visited these cities frequently, everyone seemed to find a special adventure and new view point in each port! Sailing out of San Francisco at night with all the lights on was spectacular and memorable!

Being Newcomers, of course we were playing games in between all the other fun. Charlotte Marton won the Wii Bowling Tournament with Carol Costin and Shirley Birnholz taking 2nd and 3rd. Mah Jong, LCR and Bunco were also played.

Nightly entertainment included ‘Dance Night’ with ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ Baker filling his dance card along with Jodie, the ‘Diva of Dance’ dancing the night away! Other dancers movin’ with the groove and “cutting a rug” included Muriel, Kathy, Helen, Diane, Barri, Luana, Charlotte and Joyce. Judy and Joey were the talented ‘Queens of Karaoke’! Rabbi Judy conducted an uplifting and joyful Shabbat Shalom ceremony on Friday evening.

We shared dinner together each night allowing time for conversations that went deeper, getting to know each other better and sharing tales of our daily adventures!

Jeannine hand crafted the special ‘2016 cruise necklace’ favors for the ladies and ‘survivor’ rope bracelets for the gents! Several ladies won prizes in our various drawings!

Very special thanks to Shauna Hoffman for her great ‘tour director’ guidance, Kay Moioffer’s husband Tom, Bonnie Allen and Jack Baker.

A gigantic, cruise ship size, thank you to the Newcomer’s Cruise Committee for all its time, fun ideas and hard work adding all the special touches and events to the cruise to make it even more special! The committee was led by Milly Ginsburg and included Jodie Baker, Barri & Jeannine Boren, Donna Cerna, Barb Ferone, Donna Jones, Kathy Kunkel, Luana Law, Diane Millikin, Noreen Motts, Muriel Usselman and Nancy Andrews.

Some favorite memories:

“Alcatraz Island Tour and hearing the audio of the voices”

“Whales sighted right at the boat and hundreds of dolphins playing off Santa Barbara”

“It was so much fun to be with a group and see each other all over the ship and in the ports”

“Deeper conversations with everyone”

“Seeing everyone dressed up!”

“Indulging in the spa and acupuncture”

“The indulgence of being waited on all the time!”

“Clam Chowder and Sourdough bread in San Francisco, my mouth still waters when I think of it”

“Wish the cruise could have lasted longer”

“The magic show was great, couldn’t figure out how he did it”

“How fast the time flew by!”

And finally, when are we going again?  Stay tuned…

Hold hands firmly, hearts gently

Black Angus Steakhouse opened especially for us to host the April Luncheon and General Meeting. We enjoyed a delicious meal and great entertainment from local actor and teacher George Chavez!  He spoke to us about following your passion in a very uplifting message. Our young students and community are lucky to have such an inspiring teacher!  He is currently starring as the ‘Fonz’ in CTG’s ‘Happy Days’ play.   A lively crowd of 79 members came and the lucky ones won Joyce Brady’s floral centerpieces and gifts during the Opportunity Drawing! Milly G. regaled everyone with tales from the ‘Friends a Cruising’ adventure just completed!  Looking forward to May’s annual ‘Installation’ Luncheon when we will celebrate this amazing past year and welcome our new President Diane Millikin and Board. See you at Robinson Ranch for this always fun celebration!

This game is held at the IHOP restaurant which is located on Lyons, near the I-5 freeway. We start playing at 10:30 am and take a break around noon to order lunch and eat together.

We play till about 2 pm. If you are a new member, this is a great way to start getting involved with your Club and to meet new friends. If you are a long time member, come have fun with old and new friends. We would love to have you.

Please contact me at 661-670-0395 with any questions.

Tea Ladies

Pat Oguss opened her home to us for the April Tea. Her theme was "The Language of Flowers," and her tables were set beautifully, as usual, and her center pieces were spring bouquets placed in eclectic pots down the center of each table.

We were treated to a very interesting presentation by Jeanne Iler on creating Fairy Gardens, Potscapes, and Terrariums.

Jeanne is very artistic, but says all it takes to create one of these beautiful gardens is a little imagination.  While walking her dogs, she is always on the lookout for useful pieces of bark, pinecones, and other interesting items, and when shopping, keeps a sharp eye out for things that can be transformed into small birdhouses or other interesting items that can be placed in her gardens.  Almost any plant that grows indoors can be placed in a terrarium and thrive, while requiring very little care.

Please let me know if your are interested in attending any of our monthly Teas.  I have sign-up sheets through the end of the year.

Email is best.

Hope to see you at one of the Teas.
