MONTHLY UPDATE -  JUNE 2016   Print Page

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hi friends!

First off, I would like to thank Jodie B. and her fantastic Board for the great year we just completed.  Many thanks to the Installation Committee for the hard work they put in to make it a wonderful and memorable day for myself and the new Board at our May Luncheon.  Our Luncheons are always a bright spot in the month.  Where else can you go and get hello’s and hugs from so many friends at once?  I hope you are all excited for another fun year as members of Newcomers and Friends.  I’m honored you chose me to be president, and I have a wonderful Board ready to bring you fun activities, games, socials, trips, luncheons, Coffee Corners, etc.  We have already been meeting and planning, working hard to schedule all our great ideas into the next twelve months.  Get your calendars ready, we will fill your days!

Social:  To kick things off, we are having an Ice Cream Social in June.  Look for more details below!  Pat Oguss will be heading up the Leisure Olympics again along with a couple of other favorites from last year and some new events too.  We are planning two evening events as well where you can bring your spouse or significant other if you’d like.

Activities:  Barb and Noreen are going to get our “game on” this year.  Please see their report and join in the fun!  I hear lots of ladies want to join game groups, here is your chance!

Explorers:  By the time you read this, our first event, the Vino Train to Santa Barbara, will be booked.  Donna C. and Gloria are so enthusiastic and will be bringing us many opportunities to get out and go!

Luncheons:  As of the writing of this article, we are looking for someone or a couple (2-3) of you to head up the First V.P. of Luncheons committee.  There are some great ladies willing to help you but we need a leader or two.  Please give me a call if you are willing, even if you could do 3 months’ worth but not the whole year, it would be such a service.  We have already scouted restaurants and have a tentative plan for the year.  What we need is someone to be in charge of a month; finalize the menu, share it with the board and coordinate closely with the restaurant to provide them the count for meals and follow through with them at the deadline, also to write up the Luncheon information for our Website.  Please step up and assist your Club!

Programs:  Grace has worked tirelessly to bring us interesting and inspiring speakers and enjoyable entertainment.  She has more great ideas for this year so watch for your newsletter to see what she has planned next!

Coffees:  Luana and her committee pick yummy places for our monthly breakfast.  This is an opportunity for you to visit with old members and meet prospective new members.  We’d love to see you there!

Business:  If you are willing to host a board meeting at your home, please give me a call/email.  I need 4 more months covered.  For the June 1 board meeting, it will be a potluck luncheon, where the 2015-16 board provides the meal for any new 2016-17 board members.  It’s a time to share ideas and pass on your job to your replacement, so please call/email me to sign up for a food/drink item and to RSVP if you haven’t already done so, that way I can plan enough tables and chairs.

In closing, I want to thank all of you on the 2016-17 board for volunteering and giving your time.  Your effort makes all the fun possible for the rest of us.  When we all pull together, it makes the job easier, and it is true, we couldn’t do it without all of you!

Diane

Newcomers and Friends is excited to begin our 32nd year this month! Our year runs June through May, 2017. We welcome Diane Millikin as our new President. Her motto for our year is 'Friendship is Sweet'!  She has already been very busy planning a special year for everyone! Here is a little about her:

I’m originally from central Illinois and grew up on my family’s farm near a small town.  I graduated from Missouri University of Science and Technology and Carnegie Mellon University with a BS in Chemical Engineering and a MBA.  I worked for Caterpillar and Exxon and then was lucky to be able to retire early.  My husband Sam and I have a grown son and daughter and we are very proud of their accomplishments.  I’d love to tell you about them but not on the internet!  We moved to Santa Clarita from Pittsburgh three years ago and absolutely love CA.  When my kids were growing up, I was a volunteer at their schools, a Girl Scout leader and a swimming official.  I belonged to a Ladies Day Out group and I was also a board member of the summer swim league and our winter swim club.  Besides Newcomers, out here I’m involved in my sorority ZTA, Maxine’s Divas, AAUW and Questers.  Since joining Newcomers, I have served as assistant webmaster, executive VP and as a member of the cruise committee.  I enjoy playing all the games but my favorite is Mah Jongg.  I love to attend and host teas, participate in the monthly luncheons and social events, and I meet new friends each time.  Newcomers has given me wonderful friends in the past few years, where there is always a hug and a smile whenever we gather together.

About Our Website!

Newcomers and Friends has its own website on the internet.
You can go to the website, www.ncandf.com, at any time and read the latest news.  We update the website every month with new information including Luncheon info, the President’s message and all of the ongoing activities. Then we tell Shirley Birnholz who sends everyone a "reminder" email letting you know that we have updated the information on the site.  If you do not receive these emails, or your email address changes contact Shirley. Like magazines, we update the webpage towards the end of the current month, for the next month. The exact day varies due to the many people involved and Godaddy our website manager/provider. If you have any questions or comments please contact your webmistresses/editors/writers Barri Boren and Sandy Enerle.

MAY INSTALLATION LUNCHEON
AND GENERAL MEETING

Diane Millikin and Board Members were installed as Club Officers at the annual Installation Luncheon.  This fun and very important event celebrated Newcomers & Friends continuity and all the ladies that do the hard work to make it successful.  We appreciate all those who took the time to come and join in the party! Many thanks were given to Jodie and the outgoing Board for their efforts in making this past year a great one! Jodie presented the beautiful Tapestry that we have all contributed to this past year. She said it will hang in a place of honor in her home and be a reminder of this memorable year! Jodie gave a beautiful thank you gift to all her Board members of a personalized ‘Friends’ photo frame with photographs of our year!

Diane was introduced with her motto and our theme for the new year being ‘Friendship is Sweet’.  The ladies honored her by wearing ‘pretty in pink’ outfits! Janice presented Diane with some fun gifts and Jeannine Boren acted out her ‘dislikes’.  Diane’s favorite fantasy is spending the night at Cinderella’s Castle at Disneyworld.  So the Installation Committee surprised her with a little ‘Cinderella’ fantasy! Our stellar cast of Janice Weiner as the Fairy Godmother, Kitty Zimmerman and Muriel Usselman as the ‘Dresser’s, Donna Cerna as the Kazoo trumpeting ‘Page’ and Lorrie Kurowski as ‘Prince Charming” complete with a glass slipper, gave a hilarious performance. The ‘Prince’ then danced off with Diane aka Cinderella!   Many thanks to Donna C. for the gorgeous professional costumes! We had a fun time and delicious meal at Robinson Ranch and thanks to Grace Elliott for baking those scrumptious cookies for us enjoy!  Thank you to the Installation Committee for planning this essential event for the Club!
