                                President's Message

This is my first message as your president.

I would like to begin by thanking the installation committee and the members for a beautiful installation!   I will never forget the red and turquoise colors splashed throughout the room.  The skit about my likes, fantasies, and travels was portrayed in a very entertaining manner and enjoyed by everyone.   The many thoughtful gifts were very much appreciated.

We have an exciting year planned with our monthly luncheons, socials, explorers, new member coffees, teas, games and other activities.  Please always check the website and read the newsletter because all information is posted there.

Our next monthly meeting and luncheon will be on Thursday June 8, 2017.  It will be at “Piccola Trattoria”, an Italian restaurant on 18302 Sierra Highway.  I look forward to seeing every one there.

Always remember in this “World of Friendship” my love and support is for each one of you.

Nalini Amin

                                            Getting to know Nalini

I was born and educated in India where I got my masters in English Literature from Allahabad university. I got married and moved to Illinois with my husband Raj who was attending the University of Illinois and after he got his Phd. we moved to Wilmington, Delaware. He worked for DuPont for 11 years  where both our children were born. In 1973 we moved to Valencia and in 1976 I became an U.S. citizen and went to work as an Instructional Assistant at Peachland School. In 1992 we moved to New Orleans and lived there for 8 years. We moved back to Santa Clarita in 2000.

I originally joined Newcomers in 1988 and rejoined in 2000! Positions I have held in the club have been Executive VP, VP of Luncheons, Treasurer, Secretary, Historian, Hostesses, and Opportunity Drawing. I have loved being a Newcomer and enjoy hosting teas, board meetings, playing Mahjong, socials, and day trips!

My main interests are yoga, cooking ,entertaining and traveling. But family is the most important part of my life and includes our two grown children, a 4 year old grandson, niece and two great-nephews all living here in S. Ca.

I would like to express my thanks to all the members for their love and support and am privileged and honored to be the president for the 2017-2018 year!!

To everyone that so generously contributed towards my outgoing president gifts, I want to say thank you!  I love the cake stand and crystal platter, they will come in handy for hosting future events!  The gift cards to Cheesecake Factory, for a mani/pedi, and some refreshments at Starbucks will all be used with thoughts of you!  The framed sampler about friends hangs proudly in my home and the prosecco is chilling!  To top it off, I will enjoy my flowers all summer long.  Every time I look out my kitchen window, I will be reminded that Friendship is Sweet!  I am thankful for the friendship and blessings you bring to my life.

Thank you so much!

Diane Millikin

We celebrated 'all things Spring' at Jodie Baker's house today, with wonderful food, great conversation, and lots of fun. To celebrate the season, we each made a May Basket out of pretty scrapbooking paper, colorful ribbons, and beautiful silk flowers. May Baskets traditionally are filled with candies or flowers and given to a good friend by hanging the basket on the friend's door without getting caught.

If you are interested in attending a Tea, 1:00 on the second Tuesday of the month, please contact me. Janice. 661-255-1619 or

Mexican Train Dominoes

You are invited to join us for a fun, social game of 'Mexican Train Dominoes'. Open to all members! We play the second Friday every month!

This is the only game currently available to "Newcomers & Friends" that does not require a monthly commitment or RSVP and is open to all members. Come whenever you’re available. Dominoes is a fun, but simple game that you can learn in a few minutes and play right away.

This game is held at the IHOP restaurant which is located on Lyons, near the I-5 freeway. We start playing at 10:30 am and take a break around noon to order lunch and eat together.

We play till about 2 pm. If you are a new member, this is a great way to start getting involved with your Club and to meet new friends. If you are a long time member, come have fun with old and new friends. We would love to have you.

About Our Website and Our Facebook Page

Newcomers and Friends has its own website on the internet.
You can go to the website,, at any time, 24/7 and read the latest news.  Also we recently took everyone's last name off the site to protect privacy. Upon further discussion, the Board voted we add them back for ease of use and we will do that over the next couple of months.  We update the website every month with new information including Luncheon info, the President’s message and all of our upcoming activities. Then we tell Shirley Birnholz. who sends everyone a "reminder" email letting you know that we have updated the information on the site.  If you do not receive these emails, or your email address changes contact Shirley. Like magazines, we update the webpage towards the end of the current month, for the next month. The exact day varies due to the many people involved and Godaddy our website manager/provider.

We also have a new Facebook Page- Visit Newcomers and Friends of Santa Clarita and "Like" us.

If you have any questions or comments please contact your webmistress/editor/writer Barri Boren.
