President’s Letter

First of all, thank you to the former and new board members for the great gathering at the annual pot luck in which we come together to say “good bye” to former board members and “welcome” to the new ones.  It is for me always bitter and sweet to say good bye to former board members and hello to some new members.  The former board members will be truly missed.

To the former board members: another BIG thank you for a job well done.  We formed a wonderful working board over the past year, and the credit goes to each and every one of you for your faithful service to Newcomers and Friends.

Now as I move on to July, with a grateful heart, we once again celebrate the birthday of our great country.  Every year, I’m reminded of a cute story I heard from a teacher.  She was teaching the 4-year olds, to sing “America the Beautiful” for the 4th of July picnic.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Each child was asked to draw a picture explaining the song.  One by one they stood in front of their parents and explained their drawings.  One student held up his drawing of an airplane flying in the clouds, covered with a variety of fruit.  When asked to explain his drawing, he said quite simply, “It’s the fruited plane.”    Once again, Happy Birthday, America!

Board Meeting

IMPORTANT:  July board meeting will be on JULY 11th because the first Wednesday is the Fourth of July.  The meeting will be at the Club House in the  Green Brier Estates, East End on Soledad Canyon Road.  Call Donna Jones to reserve a chair and for directions if needed.

Have you ever wondered what was behind the fences at the Pitchess Honor Rancho in Castaic???

On Wednesday, August 22,  join your Social Club hostesses and find out.

Our day will start at 10:00 am with a van tour of the rancho grounds.  We will then tour one of the custody facilities, and if time permits, we will tour the firing range and visit the sheriff's emporium.

Our afternoon will end with a lunch in the Officer's Dining Room.

The cost of the tour will be $15.00 for the lunch.

This tour is open to your friends, husbands, or relatives.  However, the tour number is limited, so get your check in ASAP.

Each attendee will be required to provide their CA driver's license number, telephone number and complete legal name. Please submit with the checks.

Parking will be at the front gate in a deputy supervised parking lot. Your purses must remain in your car. Your CA driver's license or valid picture ID must be presented at the jail. No cigarettes, drugs, or cell phones are allowed in the jail. However, you may bring bottled water, and cash in case you want to shop at the emporium.

The May tea was delightful.  Nancy Andrews and Co. did a great job.  Looking forward to the July Tea at Irene Jansson's home.  We will have a full table again this month.

    Thank you for all of your trip suggestions.  We have checked them all out and entered the results into our “decision equation!”  When we make our trip choices we take into consideration how appropriate the venue would be for the majority of our members, how much interest in going we think we can stir up, the value versus cost ratio and finally the total price.  Sadly, that eliminates many of the possibilities.  

    Our first one day trip during the reign of Donna Jones was suggested by one of our clever members. We are very excited about it—and hope you will be too!

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to be a member of the British Royal Family?  Ever want to be “Queen for a Day” or a real Princess?   

Here is an extraordinary opportunity to dwell in that dream world.   Join Newcomers and Friends on Vagabonds next glorious adventure.

The Royal Coach (previously known as the Party Bus) awaits!!!  This time it takes us to Long Beach where we will board the luxurious QUEEN MARY.

 If you have seen it before you will be amazed at the renovation. Over 5 months has been spent changing about 13,000 square feet on the Sun Deck so that it can accommodate a special new exhibit, a tea-room and a boutique.

We will tour DIANA: LEGACY OF A PRINCESS, a first-of-its kind exhibit and have the joy of seeing a multi-million dollar collection that took over 30 years to assemble.  It displays approximately 2,000 items relating to the Windsor Family including nine of Princess Diana’s dresses and gowns. The exhibit is primarily focused on the late Princess Diana but also features memorabilia from others of the royal family.  Many of the items have never been displayed in public before.

To crown our fantasy day will be a delicious TEA /LUNCHEON in the ROYAL TEA ROOM.  There will also be some free time to explore “THE QUEEN” on your own and shop, if you will!

The Cost for this exceptional trip is $89.00 per person.  
The price includes transportation, entrance to the Princess Diana exhibit with a self guided audio tour, admission to the Queen Mary and Tea/Luncheon.  All tips and taxes are included.

A portion of the proceeds generated by Diana: Legacy of a Princess will benefit a non-profit organization serving Southern California and offering needed services in the areas of breast cancer awareness and prevention.
