MONTHLY UPDATE -  JULY 2016   Print Page

Hi friends!

At our June board meeting, we heard from our Social, Explorers and Activities committees with events and adventures for the next 12 months.  Get your calendars ready, we will fill your days!  Please read all of the newsletter as they will each go into more detail and have specific dates for you.

Our June luncheon at the Hilton Garden Inn was a great event with delicious food.  Our speaker Amanda Benson was informative, entertaining, and an energetic advocate for SCV.  Did you know there are 109 non-profits in SCV?  July will bring us a new restaurant that many are excited to visit!  Be sure to check it out under luncheons and please carpool as parking is limited – unless you are willing to walk a bit.  We are also lucky to have 4 fantastic guest speakers coming – I will let Grace tell you all about them!

In June we had an ice cream social which featured not only ice cream and toppings but also friendship and socializing.  Our ice cream bar featured over 25 different toppings!  Can you say SWEET!

Be sure to sign up for our Evening Under the Stars in August.  You are welcome to bring a spouse/significant other/friend.  It will be an evening of socializing and snacking!  Details under Social.

We are looking for someone or a couple of you to head up the First V.P. of Luncheons committee for the months of January - April.  We have already scouted restaurants and have a tentative plan for the year.  What we need is someone to be in charge of a month, finalize the menu, share it with the board and coordinate closely with the restaurant to provide them the count for meals and follow through with them at the deadline and also write it up for this webnews.   Please step up and assist your club!

In closing, I hope you join in the fun this year.  We are all working hard for you, show us you appreciate it by participating!

The July Board meeting is at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday
July 6th at Nalini's lovely home. Please RSVP to Nalini
so that she can plan enough seating.

                                                                                            -Eleanor Roosevelt

On April 20, 2016, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt was welcomed to Santa Clarita by twenty-one of our Newcomers and Friends.  Mrs. Roosevelt, smartly dressed in a navy blue dress and jacket combination with matching hat and standing tall in sensible shoes, charmed everyone around her with stories about her life.  She passed around framed photographs of her weding and her Red Cross, political, and international careers.

In early childhood, Mrs. Roosevelt experienced tremendous loss (the deaths of her Mother, Father, and a Brother).  She was brought up by a very strict Grandmother.  Then, she married Franklin D. Roosevelt and accepted a controlling Mother-in-law to replace the Mother she never had.  Mrs. Roosevelt gave birth to six children and, during WWI, worked for the Red Cross.

After FDR suffered a polio attack, Mrs. Roosevelt became his eyes and ears, traveling the U.S. to report back to him about the conditions, the needs of our citizens in all parts of the country.  She changed the role of The First Lady by giving press conference and speaking on behalf of human rights, children’s causes, and women’s issues.  She wrote a newspaper column called “My Day” and a number of books.  She called attention to the plight of the poor and the inequality of racial discrimination.  During WWII, she visited U.S. Troops stationed overseas.

Mrs. Roosevelt said having been brought up by her strict Grandmother contributed greatly to her strength and ability to lead an active public life despite two world wars, the depression, and personal heartbreak.

Many thanks to the clean-up committee - - Wynn W., Kitty Z., Jody M., Carla L., and Evelyn M. - - especially for moving the furniture back into place.  Also, a BIG THANK YOU to all of the Newcomers and Friends who contributed to the buffet, which, among other goodies, featured a “community” sandwich.  One member brought cold cuts, another bought bread, another lettuce and sliced tomatoes, another mustard, etc.  Great Job Ladies.  Thank you.

Please e-mail me at to let me know all the games you are interested playing or learning.

Couples Night Out
Meet new couples and try out new local restaurants.
Join us and explore the restaurants of the Santa Clarita Valley and
surrounding areas.
Dinners will be every other month.

We have received a great response to this new activity. So much
so, that we have had to revise it a little and now are taking a total
of 12 couples.  A 'couple' is any two people.  We are looking for
two more couples, so if you are interested, let me know.  It is still
first come, first served.  We will follow the example of the
Gourmet Dining Group and split into two smaller groups,
visiting separate restaurants each time, but will continually rotate
two couples so that everyone will have an opportunity to dine out
with everyone else in the group.

If you are interested, please contact me, Janice W. at or 661-714-1117
First dinner - Sat. July 30th, 7:00p.m.
Piccola Trattoria, Canyon Country

Each party is responsible for their own bill.
The group will decide future dining dates and destinations.

The Coffee Corner

Coffee Corner welcomes potential new members and current members for a morning of friendship at different locations around SCV. The event is scheduled on the third Thursday of the month.  New members are encouraged to attend as it is a great way to make new friends and find out about the Club's activities.

The July Coffee will be held at Cocos at 24930 Pico Canyon Road and 10 AM on July 21st

Since we need to make reservations, if you plan to attend, please contact Luana L, Gwen H. or Donna J. Hope to see you there.

Mexican Train Dominoes

You are invited to join us for a fun, social game of 'Mexican Train Dominoes'. Open to all members! We play the second Friday every month!

This is the only game currently available to "Newcomers & Friends" that does not require a monthly commitment or RSVP and is open to all members. Come whenever you’re available. Dominoes is a fun, but simple game that you can learn in a few minutes and play right away.

This game is held at the IHOP restaurant which is located on Lyons, near the I-5 freeway. We start playing at 10:30 am and take a break around noon to order lunch and eat together.

We play till about 2 pm. If you are a new member, this is a great way to start getting involved with your Club and to meet new friends. If you are a long time member, come have fun with old and new friends. We would love to have you.

Please contact me at 661-670-0395 with any questions.

Tea Ladies

The June Tea was hosted by Carla, but held at Janice's home. The theme for the day was fun and laughter, and we did have lots of laughs, and that was before we got to the jokes. Carla brought some cute teapots belonging to Donna for center pieces, filled them with beautiful roses, and we were set.  It was a smaller group than usual, but it was a great opportunity to get to know one another a little better. Carla asked everyone to come ready to share their favorite joke.  We heard some new ones and some oldies, but none that we rolled our eyes at!

Please let me know if you would like to join us, as I have seats open for several of the upcoming Teas.  You do not need to be a regular and may sign up as often as you wish.
