                                President's Message

The August Luncheon at Knollwood Country Club was a special event and all who attended had a fabulous time. I missed the joy and laughter and the special skit performed by Muriel and Jodie to promote our Coco Chanel program! I would like to thank Milly, Muriel,Donna, and Alyce for leading a successful meeting on my behalf. I heard the food was attractively displayed and was a delicious cold buffet! Dr. Kimberlyn Jones did not sing but played some well known selections and gave an interesting history of opera. She is willing to return and perform for us!

Pat Oguss, our Activities Chairperson, reported that our new member Mary Anne Barranti has had great success in forming a new Hand, Knee, and Foot group! The next Game Day is scheduled for Tuesday August 29th from 1 to 4 pm.

Our next meeting and Luncheon will be on Thursday September 14 at The Residence Inn. The Committee has arranged a scrumptious Mexican buffet for us. I look forward to seeing everyone there. We will be having a special presentation welcoming our newest members. The program will also include a talk by Dr. Sy Hasan MD an endocrinologist from Santa Clarita.

Please mark Thursday October 12 for the Coco Chanel extravaganza and Luncheon at Knollwood Country Club! This is going to be an amazing event which all of you will not want to miss!!

Wishing all the Newcomers a wonderful Fall...

Nalini Amin

Julia Child Encourages Us to Use

Butter, Cream and Salt

Julia Child/Louise Willard met with 36 Newcomers on Monday, July 31st and encouraged them all to enjoy butter, cream, and salt in their daily diets but in moderation, of course. These three ingredients, commonly used in French cuisine, were only part of Julia’s Joie de Vivre or Joy of Living, which also included being a shameless prankster, attending as many parties as possible, serving the United States in WWII, and NEVER missing a meal!

A heart-felt “Thank You” to Carol Costin, Nalini Amin, Rita Jepson, Carla Lewis, Sonja Ley, and Wynn Weber, who brought over extra folding chairs, delivered the fresh flowers, and conducted the drawing for door prizes. We, truly, could not have pulled off our Julia Child Event without your help.

From Louise we learned that Julia did not become interested in French cooking, or any kind of cooking for that matter, at the home in which she was raised,.uu; in nearby Pasadena, California. She grew up in a household with a cook and her Mother even wasn’t interested in cooking. It was not until after Julia’s marriage to Paul Child, an American civil servant and diplomat, when he was sent to the American Embassy in Paris, that Julia enjoyed her first French meal served with fine wines and the use of a duck press at tableside. For Julia, this was a magical experience, almost spiritual. It was, for Julia, an awakening to the possibilities of what the world of foods could offer.

With her studies in French cuisine, her cooking school and numerous cookbooks, and her television programs, Julia Child is credited with showing the American housewife that cooking need not be just another chore for her to do. Cooking could be a creative endeavor performed for her family and friends. And we do so appreciate the members who expressed their “thanks” for this event in their variety of ways - - by telephone, handwritten notes, or emails. What a GREAT group of members we have here in Newcomers.

Tablescapes Contest at the November Luncheon!

A ‘tablescape’ is where you create a dining table setting around a theme and decorate the table you will eat at. We would like to have 10 teams for the November luncheon, with a maximum of 5 ladies per team. Design a table setting around your theme; fun, elegant, holiday, movies/TV, books, events etc. Call Joyce or Diane if you have an idea for a theme so that you get your first choice (no duplicated themes allowed) and if you have anyone you want to work with let us know.  Interested but don’t have a theme? Call us and we will match you up with other ladies looking to form a team.  Either way, join in the fun!

Create your table setting around your theme and include: a centerpiece, written menu, favors and themed items for tablemates to wear, optional ideas: placemats or costumes even.  There will be 5 team members at the table and 3-5 guests joining you so plan something that incorporates your guests into your theme.  You will not need a tablecloth, dishes, flatware, glassware, etc. as we will be decorating the actual tables we eat at so the restaurant will be providing the dishes, etc.  We have requested the restaurant to use white tablecloths and white napkins to go with any theme.  We plan to be a Le Chen with round tables that seat 8-10.  Put your effort into your centerpiece and small touches for the table and how your team members match the theme.

Judging criteria:  Creativeness, Uniqueness, Menu, Theme representation, Eye appeal.

Questions/sign-ups:  Joyce Brady or Diane Millikin

Please join us for the 3rd annual
Holiday Cookie Exchange.  It will be held at the home of Janice Weiner:

More details will follow once I know about how many of you will be participating.  Each person will be asked to bake approximately 4 dozen cookies.  This year, we are going to try something a little new, and ask those of you who are feeling adventurous to try a new recipe.  We are willing to be your guinea pigs!

A light lunch will be served.  Please RSVP via email or phone: or 661-714-1117.

I am looking forward to seeing you there!
