                   President's Message

We will install our new President Donna Cerna on Thursday
May 10th at the Installation Luncheon. We send our congratulations and best wishes to her and the incoming Board members. I
am looking forward to seeing all of you attend this special event

Thank you for giving me the honor and privilege of being your President for the 2017-2018 year! I would like to thank my amazing Board members for their hard work in making this an outstanding year. You truly were my “World of Friendship”. We are an unique group with 211 members and with the leadership of
Donna Cerna we will continue to thrive and flourish!

                 Opportunity Drawings at the Luncheon!

Our Luncheon Team works very hard to get the best value and lowest price for our Luncheons.  However with the rising costs, especially labor and gas, the venues are substantially raising their prices to us. The Team and Board will continue to bring you a fun experience at each monthly Luncheon and General Meeting but probably with higher cost.  The Board discusses many alternatives each month, please come to a Board Meeting for further information.

What good shall I do this day?

ACTIVITIES

                       Looking for a Community Room

Do you have a church or community room Newcomers could use for a social event in April for free or a small fee? We’d want to serve light snacks and drinks and have tables and chairs for 60-75 ladies. If you can help us out or have suggestions contact Joyce Brady or Diane Millikin. Thank you!

Newcomers Explorer’s Trips 2018

Brunch at the Beach

The Brunch at the Beach trip has been cancelled. The fellow who runs the Brunch at the Beach vintage train sent an email indicating that effective immediately, all vintage train cars can no longer be hooked up to Amtrak trains. The reason given was ~ the vintage train car (one car) frequently causes the Amtrak train to run late. According to John (LA Rail) this happens less than one percent of the time. The bottom line is the trip is cancelled.

If you signed up for the trip, your money will be refunded. John will refund the money to Margie, and she will send it out to the ladies who paid the $189.

On a more pleasant note ~ Amtrak does run a business class trip to San Diego. It sounds fairly similar to Brunch at the Beach. It provides a light breakfast with coffee, tea, etc. on the southbound trip and light meal (box lunch type) and drinks (wine included) on the north bound trip. The cost is about $118 for the Amtrak portion. If there is enough interest, we can certainly schedule a trip in May. Soooo if you are interested, please let Kathi Giddens or Geri Benne know ASAP.

If you have a suggestion for an Explorer trip during the next fiscal year (June, 2018 through May, 2019) please send Geri Benne or Kathi Giddens an email with your suggestion.

The Sock Hop was a hit! Many of our members had a great time at Route 66 answering Trivia questions, trying to guess who was who from high school photos, and dancing rock n roll and twisting like we did last summer in the dance contest. Many of us wore outfits from the 1950's that brought a lot of wonderful memories of our time in high school. To name a few of these 50’s dressed ladies there was Pat Oguss in a red poodle skirt and a ponytail, Kathy Kunkel dressed and danced in polka dots, Alice Brotherton wore a letter sweater and jeans, Barri Boren wore jeans and a white shirt and be boped about the dance floor. Donna Jones came as Annette Funichello, a Mousketeer,  while Sandi Cates came dressed as a very glamorous adult all dressed up in vibrant orange from hat to toes. Marcie Gorham was a delight dressed in a pink poodle skirt and a black sweater and flats. Jodie B was dressed as a cheerleader from 1957. Quite a few of the members went home with prizes won for the best answers, dance moves and matching photos. There was a banner upon which we signed our names and the year of our High School graduation. We all went home with adorable pink poodle pins and some got faux coca cola Ice cream sodas that were made by the creative Sock Hop committee. Many thanks to all who attended and to those who helped create and decorate!

Annual Substitute List

Hi everyone, it's time to start a new year playing games. Our club has grown and so has the number of groups and games. I am compiling the annual list of subs for all the games Newcomers play. The list gets outdated as games are added or changed.

If you were on the sub list last year you need to renew as there are new games you may want to get involved with. Hopefully more people will get to sub and the game leaders will be able to find subs when they are needed.

Contact me if you want to sub this year. Let me know which games you are able to play and include your phone number. For a list of games please check the Activities page on our website. This past year we've added a few Pinochle groups that are not on the website.

Thank you

Thank you to everyone that joined us for our bingo social on March 29th.  Approximately 30 friends came together for fun games, prizes, snacks and friendship.  We’ve received a lot of positive feedback and plan to have another event next year!

Mexican Train Dominoes

You are invited to join us for a fun, social game of 'Mexican Train Dominoes'. Open to all members! We play the second Friday every month!

This is the only game currently available to "Newcomers & Friends" that does not require a monthly commitment or RSVP and is open to all members. Come whenever you’re available. Dominoes is a fun, but simple game that you can learn in a few minutes and play right away.

This game is held at the IHOP restaurant which is located on Lyons, near the I-5 freeway. We start playing at 10:30 am and take a break around noon to order lunch and eat together.

We play till about 2 pm. If you are a new member, this is a great way to start getting involved with your Club and to meet new friends. If you are a long time member, come have fun with old and new friends. We would love to have you.

Please contact me at 661-670-0395 with any questions.

                            TEA LADIES

Guests were welcomed to the beautiful home of our President, Nalini, to celebrate Vasant, or Indian Spring. For the first time in the history of the Tea Group, there were no scones, but fortunately, in addition to all of the other delicious food, the ladies were able to try samosas, which are tasty savory treats.

Everyone was encouraged to participate in a fun, unique activity, and try flash henna tattoos, which look like beautiful gold filigree bracelets, and which if cared for properly can last 4-5 days.

Please contact me if you are interested in attending a Tea through the end of this year.

The Coffee Corner

Coffee Corner welcomes potential new members and current members for a morning of friendship at different locations around SCV. The event is scheduled on the third Thursday of the month.  New members are encouraged to attend as it is a great way to make new friends and find out about the Club's activities.

The May Coffee Corner will be held at Mama's Table on May 17th at 10AM. The address is 23340 Cinema Drive, Valencia, CA.

Since we need to make reservations, if you plan to attend, please contact Luana (661-259-0666), Gwen (661-299-1834) or Donna (661-254-8796).

Hope to see you there.

Life isn't always full of reasons to smile, but your smile itself is a reason to smile too!

                                             Thank You

I would like to thank everyone who helped to make my Board Positions so easy this past club year. Without the ladies behind the scenes to help with the table decor. the special event decorations, the fashion show and the sock hop, the installation and the co chairing for my Teas and the ladies who made dessert and hosted when I could not at the book group. None of this could not have been accomplished so easily with out your help. Bless your sweet hearts…. you know who you are and i am grateful for your friendships! One thing I know for sure is friendship is a beautiful gift!

Installation is almost here and your President Nalini Amin and her board have put together a beautiful and fun installation for your incoming President Donna Cerna and her board. I hope all of you will be there to “turn the page” to a new club year of friendship and fun for all.

In the next club year I will be doing the decorations again as it has been my most favorite task! I am hoping to have three or four of you to act as my assistants. Please let me know if you will help when needed. Many thanks to all,

Jodie
