Monthly Updates - 11/14

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

At this time I want to salute Barri Boren and her committee for an incredible event. We had 119 people attend and the feedback was that our members and guests had an amazing time. The Committee reported that the event was under budget and held within the preferred time limits!

Now, we are approaching the holidays and our festivities will be a grandeur happening. We all
have to remember that friends increase the quality of our lives. Your presence at any of our
events fills our time with meaning. So when we don't see you, you are definitely missed!

We wish you all a very special and joyful Holiday Season and hope to see you at our Luncheon!
We will be celebrating at Le Chene with Patti Finley from the Canyon Theater Guild entertaining us!

  Milly Ginsburgh, President

Tweaking the By-Laws

At the November Board Meeting the “By-Law Tweaking” continued.  We made great progress!   As our reward, we will be taking a vacation and not be addressing any by-law issues in December. But, in January, we will trudge on and be examining Article 14 which deals with committee chairpersons.  We will be discussing Sections 1 – 10.  (See by-laws)

It is important that we get input and participation from members currently holding these positions.  If this is YOU and you are doing a job described in these sections please make every effort to attend the January Board meeting.  We would be pleased to get any suggestions you have about sections 1-10 at any time.  The sooner the better!  The By-Laws do not take off time for any of the upcoming Holidays!

Thank you for all the help you have given us.

Happy Holidays.
Alyce Kesselman and Marlene “Mikki” Garside.

You can always see the web news from last month in the archives
and the complete by laws can be found on the website.

***News & Notes

Getting to know……Gwen Halstead

This month I interviewed Gwen Halstead and I hope you enjoy getting to know her a little better as much as I have!

Gwen is originally from California, she grew up in North Hollywood/Sherman Oaks and attended Van Nuys High School.  Growing up, she and her sister worked at El Portal and Le Reina Theatres and Curries Ice Cream.  After attending Pearch College, her career took her to Tulsa, OK as the leasing agent and decorator for a builder of luxury apartments and custom homes.  This job led to her leasing an apartment to her future husband, who happened to be transferring to Tulsa from North American Aerospace in Canoga Park.  Gwen remained in Tulsa for 40 years, raising her two daughters, volunteering with groups such as the Office of Equal Opportunity, YWCA, and Salvation Army Auxiliary and she was the President of a Women's political group. A unique job she held was selling fishing tackle!  Gwen moved back to California to Santa Clarita and joined Newcomers in 2000 after the death of her husband, so that she could be closer to family and care of her aunt and parents, beginning a new season in life.

Gwen has been active in Newcomers doing publicity, playing Mah Jongg, Hand Foot and Knee, attending the fantastic luncheons (thanks to those that plan them!) and heading up the “Gift of Giving” which collects donations for Toys for Tots, Help the Children and Domestic Violence - we are so blessed and make a big difference with our donations every year.  Gwen shared that the publicity job has evolved over the years from originally hand delivering articles to 3 newspapers and a community television calendar, to faxing to them, to now emailing articles to The Signal, the last community newspaper, and the city web calendar.  It took over 10 years to develop a rapport with The Signal, but now Newcomers receives regular publicity and published articles with them.

Outside of Newcomers, Gwen is a director for the HOA in Friendly Valley, serving as secretary, and is involved in politics.  Her favorite authors are Clancey, Forsythe, Ludlow and LaHaye.  She loves listening to WWII music from the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s!  The best countries she has traveled to are Italy, England and Canada.  In the U.S., she loves Savannah, Charleston, and Washington D.C. for history and beauty and Hawaii, Malibu and Hilton Head for the beach, beauty and relaxation.  She enjoys spending time with her daughter that moved from Tulsa to Burbank, her sister and family here, and her other daughter and grandchildren that live in Tennessee.  She is blessed to be able to spend two months in Tennessee with them every year.

Newcomers has meant meeting and having new lifelong friends.  Besides the close friendships you make, wherever you go, to the mall, grocery store, restaurants, etc. you always see someone you know.  You might not remember their name but you are always greeted with a smile and sometimes a hug.  Love and faith along with smiles and hugs get us through all the seasons of our lives.

Thank you Gwen, for giving us a peek into your life!

*** The November Luncheon was a special celebration held at TPC. We delighted in a delicious Thanksgiving Turkey with all the trimmings and entertainment by June Swiercz playing her Native American Flute.

TEA LADIES

Fall is in the air and leaves are beginning to drop. To celebrate this great season, Lorrie Kurowski greeted 21 of us at her lovely home for  the November Tea.  Her tables were so pretty scattered with fall colored leaves, candles, scarecrows and all things that represent this time of year. Before sharing tea and great food we had a quiz about famous couples or partners.  We then shared what we had been doing for Halloween and what our plans were for Thanksgiving and the Holiday season. It is amazing what our minds have stored and what info we can pull up almost at the snap of our fingers! We were delighted to have new members Werika and Joanna join us for a great day.

Thank You to Lorrie and her co chairs Kathy H. and Kathy K.  oh, and a little help from JB.

Our Holiday Celebration Tea will be at Jodie's home on Tuesday December 9th. We have a waiting list for it.

Friends are one of life's best gifts.
Happy Holidays, Janice and Jodie

If you are interested in joining us for Tea, please contact either Jodie Baker or Janice Weiner.  You can reach either of us via phone, email, or in person to be added to our Guest Lists.

The guest lists fill up quickly, so please contact us as early as possible. We will place names on a waiting list when necessary.
