Hi Ladies,

Pumpkins, hay bales, ghosts and goblins, changing leaves, cooling temps for a few days at least, fall-California style-is in the air!  We kicked off fall with a festive Mexican buffet at Darios and were privileged to have Assemblyman Scott Wilk as our speaker.  He provided us with some interesting insight on how Sacramento government really works and also updated us on the latest high speed rail and water supply initiatives.

I want to thank everyone that attended Evening Under the Stars.  My husband Sam and I enjoyed hosting everyone and appreciate all the help with set up, clean up, delicious food, drinks and the loaning of tables and chairs, etc.  Our next evening event will be Saturday, October 29th at 6 p.m.  See below for details and we hope you will attend!

I hope you all enjoy the many activities we have scheduled for the rest of the year – you can fill your days if you choose to participate!  Take a look at our interactive calendar below so that you can plan what you’d like to join in on!  There are some new things added.

For the October luncheon we have a great member-led event.  There will be a table decorating contest – Tablescapes!  Come see how creative some of the ladies are at our luncheon to be held at Knollwood Country Club - we have their main ballroom with it’s beautiful view and lots of space for the displays and our luncheon tables too.  The teams are hard at work designing their creative masterpieces for all to see.  There’s still time to join a team or form your own, contact Muriel Usselman and her committee to sign up.  Everyone else attending will get to sit back and admire the handiwork!  In addition, we will have a brief PowerPoint presentation on the website and how to navigate it.  Bring your questions.

Again, I want to thank my team/board members/chairladies and those working behind the scenes to make this a fantastic year, especially those that continue to help and support me in so many ways.  I appreciate you all!

The Board Meeting will be held on Wed. Oct 5 at 1.00 p.m. at the lovely home of Joyce Brady. The address is 24403 Firenze Pl, Valencia Ca 91355

Tel. 661-678-0235

It's that time of year to gather all those little toiletries you brought home from your great summer travels. Individual members can bring them to the October luncheon for SCV DOMESTIC VIOLENCE and we will deliver them. Full size toiletries are also welcomed. These donations are so appreciated as they off-set their budget expenses. See you at the luncheon!

Evening Under the Stars - Recap

At the close of August, approximately fifty of our members and guests enjoyed an end-of-Summer “Evening Under the Stars” poolside at the home of our President Diane Millikin and her husband Sam. Diane and Sam engaged a local keyboard trio to set a sophisticated tone for the evening. Assistant hostess Muriel U. coordinated the Wine Tasting Contest. The 4 winners of the contest are Linda B., Kathy K., Carol C. and Ron O. We hope they are enjoying their prizes.

Assistant hostess Cookie D. helped greet arriving guests with name-tags. The glowing candles, shimmering decorations, and general party set up was courtesy of Jodie B. and Luana L.

Old and new members mingled and munched on a wide range of party fare brought by members and their guests. Wine, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks were available to wash everything down. As beautiful as this party was - - food, decorations, conversations, weather, music, home, backyard, and party finery - - it couldn’t last forever. Thankfully, after most of the guests had left, Kay M., Carol C., Linda E., Evelyn M., Kathy K., and Kathy H. were gracious enough to stay a little later to help with the cleanup chores.

Thank you, Diane and Sam, for opening your home to us for our beautiful “Evening Under the Stars” and thank you to all of our members and guests for bringing two tables full of delicious food and drink.

To All Game Players

We would like to compile a list of all players who would like to play in a game or become a member of a sub list for a game.

Hopefully this will help to start new groups or get more calls to sub in a game.

Also established games will be able to add to their sub lists.

Please e-mail me to let me know all the games you are interested playing or learning.

Also let me know of any other activities such as bowling or movies or any group you would like to see started.

If you have a game and are having trouble finding a sub please call Barbara Ferone, I have a list of members hoping to play. I can also assist your group with a list of venues you can play in instead of individual homes.

Thank you,

We have two game cruises on the books and are extending an invitation to all members and guests to join in the fun. Here are the particulars:

Cruise #1 is a 7 day Mexican Riviera jaunt featuring the ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta with 3 days at sea. It departs Saturday, November 12th and returns the 19th. The price fluctuates depending on your choice of room, loyalty level and any specials that may be offered.

Cruise #2 is a 4 day West Coast Getaway featuring Santa Barbara and Ensenada with a day at sea. It departs January 17th and returns the 21st. Price may vary here as well. The ship for both voyages is the Ruby Princess. Both depart and return to Los Angeles. We are able to book shuttle transportation with a designated pick up and drop off point for those interested.

If you would like to be a part of these adventures, I recommend you go online to look at the rooms available and the prices; locate another game player to join you, and call the travel agent of your choice to secure a spot.

In the past we have booked through Dee Garcia, Ships and Trips, whose number is (916) 408-7371. She is able to link our rooms and dining tables together and provides excellent service. You are welcome to book elsewhere as well.

I sincerely hope you will consider joining the group. We have had many an enjoyable evening aboard.

Mexican Train Dominoes

You are invited to join us for a fun, social game of 'Mexican Train Dominoes'. Open to all members! We play the second Friday every month!

This is the only game currently available to "Newcomers & Friends" that does not require a monthly commitment or RSVP and is open to all members. Come whenever you’re available. Dominoes is a fun, but simple game that you can learn in a few minutes and play right away.

This game is held at the IHOP restaurant which is located on Lyons, near the I-5 freeway. We start playing at 10:30 am and take a break around noon to order lunch and eat together.

We play till about 2 pm. If you are a new member, this is a great way to start getting involved with your Club and to meet new friends. If you are a long time member, come have fun with old and new friends. We would love to have you.

Please contact me at 661-670-0395 with any questions.

Tea Ladies

We enjoyed a wonderful tea at Sandy's home where we welcomed Fall and enjoyed the nice, cool weather, too! As usual, the food was wonderful, including homemade pumpkin scones and several excellent chocolatey desserts.

It is time to begin planning for the 2017 Tea season.

We need hostesses for 11 months as Charnell has graciously offered to hostess a Chinese Tea in November. When I get the names of the rest of the 2017 hostesses, I will send that info out to everyone and accept guest list sign-ups. You can email me or call me on my cell,
Each Hostess determines the number of guests, including herself that she can accommodate, and also decides whether or not she wants a theme and/or a quiz. Neither is necessary, but a theme sometimes does really make things fun. If there is to be a quiz, the hostess provides prizes (usually 1st through 3rd place.) I can make up the quiz unless the hostess wants to do it herself.
I always put a short paragraph in the newsletter every month, with the hope that someone who has never attended will be intrigued and join us. (I recently heard someone say that she wasn't interested as she thought we sat around talking about different types of teas!) I think we may want to start including a photo or two on a regular basis. The last one submitted was from Charnell's last tea. I am open to your comments on the subject.
Hostesses are welcome to borrow any items they do not have, and I can arrange that for anyone who needs me to do so. So, don't let the fact that you have only one kettle or only 6 tea cups discourage you from hostessing.
You can also have a co-hostess if you want, and her duties can vary according to the hostess' needs, but she should mainly be responsible for making sure each table has full teapots.
We have had three new member express interest in the Teas, and I am looking forward to meeting them.
Also, remember that when you receive a reminder from me about an upcoming Tea, it is because you signed up for it. So, please mark your calendars. I also encourage you to add your name to the waiting list if the guest list for a particular Tea is full, as based on past history, there is a good chance that you will move to the guest list by the time I send out the reminders.

Please continue letting me know if you find that you are not able to attend a Tea that you have signed up for as this allows me to include someone from the waiting list. You do not need to confirm if you are attending.

I am looking forward to another fun year.

About Our Website!

Newcomers and Friends has its own website on the internet.
You can go to the website,, at any time, 24/7 and read the latest news.  At the October Luncheon we will have a short training session presented by Donna Cerna and Barri Boren on how to easily use our website. We have added new features to it and you'll want to know how to use them! Also we recently took everyone's last name off the site to protect privacy. Upon further discussion, the Board voted we add them back for ease of use and we will do that over the next couple of months.  We update the website every month with new information including Luncheon info, the President’s message and all of our upcoming activities. Then we tell Shirley Birnholz. who sends everyone a "reminder" email letting you know that we have updated the information on the site.  If you do not receive these emails, or your email address changes contact Shirley. Like magazines, we update the webpage towards the end of the current month, for the next month. The exact day varies due to the many people involved and Godaddy our website manager/provider. If you have any questions or comments please contact your webmistresses/editors/writers Barri Boren and Sandy Enerle.
