Monthly Updates - 6/12 June 2012

Newcomers and Friends is delighted to introduce Donna Jones as our President for the 2012-2013 year! Donna was sworn in at the May luncheon amidst much fanfare. All the ladies were decked out in purple and yellow in honor of her favorite color and flower.

Donna's motto for the club this year is "Parade through life with friendship." She was crowned with a purple drum majorette hat and presented with a baton to lead us this year!

The yellow rose, which signifies "exuberance, joy and warmth" is her favorite flower and fits her perfectly! Among Donna's favorite things are mystery books, Celtic music, 'White Diamonds' perfume, wine, hot tea and popcorn.

Donna is married to Bill, the love of her life and they celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary this year! They were blessed with three daughters and a son, and 11 grandchildren. She is a fraternal twin, a native of Michigan and a cancer survivor. She worked as an Administrative Assistant and as preschool teacher for many years.

Donna's friend Pat Passalacqua brought her to Newcomers & Friends after the loss of her son in 2003. She is forever grateful to the new friends that helped her through that difficult time. She has been active in the club ever since, serving on the board as Telephone, Hostess and as 1st Vice-President/Luncheons the past several years.

Donna wants everyone to have lots of fun this year; to be able to leave their cares at home for a few hours while enjoying our friends!  Get ready, we're in for a marvelous 'parade' this year!

We also want to extend a huge thank you to Carol Maul for her wonderful year of service as President! It's not always easy 'wearing all the hats' of the president and we are grateful for the special women who take on this challenge for our club!

President’s Letter

Carol Maul, it's been great working with you. Thank you for all the hours spent working together to enrich the Newcomers and Friends.
How can I ever thank the board members for the wonderful installation luncheon.   I know that many hours went into the preparation and planning. It was indeed a labor of love.
To all my friends, I look forward to serving as your president. I hope the year will bring sharing of laughter, love and fellowship.
Friends make this earth a garden.

Board Meeting

Special Board Meeting on June 6 for New Board Members and Outgoing Board Members only.  A Potluck Luncheon will be provided by the past year’s Board Members to welcome our new members.  A Board Meeting will follow the potluck luncheon.

Lunch will be served at 12 noon.  Board Meeting will start at 1pm.  It would be fun to wear Red White and Blue at the Board Luncheon and the same at the luncheon (Flag Day).  If there are any questions or if you are an outgoing board member and plan on attending, please call Donna, if you have not already signed up.  Donna Jones and Nancy Andrews will be our Hostesses.

Directions: It will be held at the Clubhouse in Green Brier Estates, East End, on Soledad Canyon Road.  There will be a balloon at the gate and Irene Jansson will open the gate for you.

There are 2 entrances but the one that should be entered is the one right in front of the clubhouse. The gates are close together and there is only one clubhouse.  If you are coming from Bouquet Canyon Road it is the second entrance. There will be a balloon on the gate and Irene will be at that gate to beam you in. If you have any questions, call Irene at 925-980-3096.

For location, contact Carolyn Wolf or Shirley Lamoureaux.

Reminder:  If you are interested in joining us for the June 27th outing let us know asap.  It is filling up fast and we can only have 33 people attending.

The June outing will be a 1½ hour guided bus tour of the Van Nuys airport, located at 16461 Sherman Way in Van Nuys. The tour will take you on a captivating journey of aviation, past and present. Our last stop on the tour is the fire station on the airport grounds, giving you a close look at and explanation of their station and the city's emergency response equipment.

After the tour we will lunch at the 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant, adjacent to the runway at the airport. The restaurant is styled as a french chalet with memorabilia from World War II. While you're dining you can watch planes land and take-off and listen to the tower traffic with the provided earphones.
As always, you may bring your friends, husbands or whomever, over 18 only please. You will be required to provide your own transportation.

The tour is free, however there will be a $5 charge to hold your place.  This money will be donated to the LA City Fireman's relief fund.  Please send your check, made out to Dorothy Karnes, at 20152 Northcliff Drive, Santa Clarita  91351.

The overnight trip to Fresno was a big success!!!  Thank you for the many nice compliments which are always welcome.  Your show of appreciation is what makes us continue to work hard at planning new adventures for your enjoyment.

As we mentioned last month, we have many faithful followers who spur us on.   This coming year we hope to convert some of our less involved members into believers and give them the opportunity to join us and find out just how much they have been missing.

Before we start actively planning, we would like to solicit your help.  Is there some place on your “bucket list” that we could all enjoy together?  Do you have a bright idea for a day or an overnight trip?  Please contact any Vagabond –by any method—and clue us in!  All suggestions will be gratefully received and discussed before decisions are made!!

We have already received a few good suggestions but we are anxious for more!

Good news from Pat Passalacqua whose son-in-Law is back home from surgery and doing nicely.

Wishing speedy recovery to Milly Ginsburgh and her husband, following his hospitalization.

Wishing you all good health!

Carla Crancer and Pat Oguss

If you or anyone your know has a special celebration or an illness, please send the information to a Sunshine chairperson,  so that she can send them a card and include them in our monthly updates.
