Be sure to scroll down to get all the latest news!

But with Newcomers, you know you will get FUN!  February brings us a sweet day, and no it’s not Valentine’s Day!  It’s our luncheon, and this month is all about socializing, laughing, relaxing and having fun.  Break out your hat – vintage, red, pretty, silly, original, be creative!  Wear some blingy jewelry, or a fun or festive outfit if you feel it, and join us for merriment, great food and prizes!

February also brings us the nominating committee and preparation of the slate of officers to be voted on at the March meeting.  We need new faces and new ideas to join the dedicated ladies that serve on the board.  Please contact me to let me know how you will help for next year.  So many of the positions can be shared, it’s a great way to get involved and make even more friends.  So, step up and volunteer – we want to keep the momentum from this year going but we need you to do that!

For March, we will get you up and moving on the dance floor!  It’s a Cowboy Festival themed BBQ luncheon with line dancing!  For April, we plan to have the annual auction with a few twists!  Look for details upcoming and if you have an idea to share, please do so!  I hope to see you there!

We aren’t slowing down yet!  There are events planned for every month this spring. Check out the calendar, read the website, sign up and join us at something fun!

Friendship is Sweet!

Calling all ladies!  We want you! We need you!

Here's your chance to join in on the fun. We are actively seeking volunteers for Board positions beginning with the new year in June. Positions can be "shared" with another member or a team. Please contact Diane Millikin, Jodie Baker or Janice Weiner for more information or to  volunteer. Details on each position are available on our website, under the By-Laws tab on the left side of the home screen.

The following positions are open:
  • First Vice President-Luncheons (selects Luncheon locations)
  • Treasurer
  • Historian (photographer/annual memory book Scrapbook style or digital) - Co-chair
  • Luncheon Programs - Co-chair

It takes a lot of ladies to continue to provide all the activities we  enjoy in this Club, we thank all of those who have served in the past and given so much to make this Club successful!

New Crochet Group

This is a reminder that the very first Newcomers crochet group meeting will happen Friday, January 27, 2017 from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM at my house! I'm
very excited to see so much interest!

Some practical information:
Address: 20047 Avenue of the Oaks, Newhall.
Phone: 661-803-4027 (cell) 661-252-0306 (house)

Materials needed: crochet hook (newbies ~ I would suggest either and H or an I hook), yarn (newbies ~ I would suggest a skein of yarn that shows the weight as 4 on the label, ~ anywhere from 4 to 7 ounce skeins will do). If you are an experienced crocheter, feel free to bring a pattern you want to work on. Newbies ~ we'll start with something really simple). You might also want to bring a small pair of scissors and blunt needles with an eye large enough for the yarn.
Directions to my house:  I am not in Friendly Valley. I live in Scenic Hills, which is located just off Sierra Highway and Rainbow Glen.
If you are coming from Valencia, the easiest way (at least to me) is come across Newhall Ranch Road, which turns into Golden Valley Road. At the intersection of Golden Valley and Sierra Highway, turn left. Go one block  to Rainbow Glen Drive. Turn left. You will see a condo complex and single family house complex ~ ignore them! Go straight about 300 feet. There is a gate ~ Scenic Hills. Enter the code ~ #6383. Go straight to the second STOP sign. Turn left. At the end of the willow trees, turn right. My house is at the end of the cul-de-sac ~ on the right when you are facing the houses.
If you are interested, attached is a PDF document illustrating various crochet stitches. It has pretty good illustrations.
I hope this information helps. If you have any questions, please let me know. If you know someone who wants to do this but their name doesn't appear above, feel free to forward this email to them.

Look forward to seeing you Friday.

The Coffee Corner

Coffee Corner welcomes potential new members and current members for a morning of friendship at different locations around SCV. The event is scheduled on the third Thursday of the month.  New members are encouraged to attend as it is a great way to make new friends and find out about the Club's activities.

The February Coffee Corner will be held at Mimi's Café, 24201 Magic Mountain Parkway at 10:00 AM on February 16th.

Since we need to make reservations, if you plan to attend, please contact Luana L., Gwen H. or Donna J. Hope to see you there.

How beautiful a day can be when friendship touches it.

Mexican Train Dominoes

You are invited to join us for a fun, social game of 'Mexican Train Dominoes'. Open to all members! We play the second Friday every month!

This is the only game currently available to "Newcomers & Friends" that does not require a monthly commitment or RSVP and is open to all members. Come whenever you’re available. Dominoes is a fun, but simple game that you can learn in a few minutes and play right away.

This game is held at the IHOP restaurant which is located on Lyons, near the I-5 freeway. We start playing at 10:30 am and take a break around noon to order lunch and eat together.

We play till about 2 pm. If you are a new member, this is a great way to start getting involved with your Club and to meet new friends. If you are a long time member, come have fun with old and new friends. We would love to have you.

Please contact me at 661-670-0395 with any questions.

About Our Website!

Newcomers and Friends has its own website on the internet.
You can go to the website,, at any time, 24/7 and read the latest news.  Also we recently took everyone's last name off the site to protect privacy. Upon further discussion, the Board voted we add them back for ease of use and we will do that over the next couple of months.  We update the website every month with new information including Luncheon info, the President’s message and all of our upcoming activities. Then we tell Shirley Birnholz. who sends everyone a "reminder" email letting you know that we have updated the information on the site.  If you do not receive these emails, or your email address changes contact Shirley. Like magazines, we update the webpage towards the end of the current month, for the next month. The exact day varies due to the many people involved and Godaddy our website manager/provider. If you have any questions or comments please contact your webmistresses/editors/writers Barri Boren and Sandy Enerle.

January was a rough month. Lillian Christopher underwent
an operation but is now doing well at home, Grace Elliot had a hospital stay, Sandy Cates is at a healing facility after a bad fall, and Alyce Kesselman underwent an operation and is healing nicely. But, there is sun shining through the clouds as Sharon Welch is celebrating birth of a new granddaughter. Let's hope next month shines like a star.

She's sick/ down in dumps/ family news joyful or sad
recovering from physical ailment/ just plain needs a
boost---we can help just call Kitty Z., Sunshine co-ordinator.

Life is always better when you know someone cares!

Friendship lightens every burden and makes the sun shine brighter.

Happy Birthday to all our special ladies!

Come to the monthly Luncheon & General Meeting
and you will receive a special gift!
